Production of baby chicks was well under way in the Kennewick area this week with orders coming in from many parts of the U. S. A. and orders being filled, destino ed for the same distant points. Baby chick hatching is one of the outstanding spring businwses for Kennewick, with several hat cheries functioning on large scales. The biggest business will be from now until about June 1 when hatching starts slacking off. The chicks hatched now will become broilers in a few weeks and many of these will go to the butcher‘s market. Pallets raised for laying will start producing eggs about August 1. Benton county poultry produc ers were advised this week to take a look at their brooders to see how their baby chicks are standing the weather. While the big hatcheries have adequate facilities to raise their chicks without fear of' harm from cold weather, the small pro ducer often finds cool weather a handicap. County Agent Webster says that producers should take time to watch their birds. If they are huddled and crowded under neath the hover and chirping loudly, they‘re probably too cold. On the other hand, if the birds are too hot, they,re probably stay ing away from the broader. ‘ Chicks that are comfortable are naturally quiet, and when bedded down at night, stay right around the edge of the broader. And what if the chicks are too hot or too cold? Dr. Wilson Hen derson, Diagnostic veterinarian, Western Washington Experiment Station, has these suggestions to offer. If the heat is not constant. the Dated at Kennewick, Washing ton. this 3rd day of March, 1949. This condition is not the fault of the electric broader, but purely a circumstance of the day. The best thing to do if the heat fluctuates is to put in some form of auxiliary heat during the first week of brooding. and especially during the periods ‘when the weather gets chilly. Additional information on meet ing brooding? problems can‘ be ob tained from the county extension office, Webster said. Ocecm Called Man's Last Food Resort AUCKLAND, New Zealand (UP) “The ocean is man’s next iron tier and it may be his last,” Dr. J. L. Kask of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization told the Pacific science congress. Mankind’s survival may depend on the use of sea food, he said Pointing out that the World's population had doubled in the last century, he said intensive drives should force the ocean to yield more food. The United States government should appropriate millions of dollars to investigate Central Pa cific fisheries, he contended. Fishing, he said is confined mostly to shallow waters. and Professional and Service Directory ABSTRACTS Benton County Abstract & Title Co. 818 Kenn. Ave. Phone Oltl W Ed. M.
