On the Monday following the last deliv ery Jos. Lavender came to town to trace'up a report that a man had been seen riding one of his (Lavender's) horses s and driving a bunch Cf cattle toward Ritzville. He and Mr. Bovee compared notes and determined that there was something wrong about the cattle deal, as well as horse deal. L. H. was notified at once and lie came jn from the thresher where lie was at work and identified the cattle as his, and also stated that he had no brother C. There being no justice of the peace in town at the time Mr. Batemun went to Sprague Tuesday morning and tiled a complaint charging one J. H. Pall with the crime of cattle stealing and Win. Gibbons as accessory. It was thmight that the men would be found in the neighborhood of Har rington, Lincoln county. As sooon as word was received here that a warrant wan issued Deputy sheriff Gilson and Mr. Bovee started for the north part of the county on the Harrington road to be ready to assist in the capture if the men should come into Adams county. Not finding any trace of the men they kept going until they reach ed Harrington where they found that about three hours before Sheriff Devonish with two deputies had found both tha men and ai rested Gibbons bi»t that Pall after exchanging two or three shots with Deputy McNamara had got away. A couple of days was then spent looking for Pall in the Duck lake country but without success When the Adams county men return ed home last Thursday Deputy sheriff Gilson received a message from Deputy McNamara that there was a report that Pall was at Krupp on the Great Northern at 4 o'clock the day before inquiring the road to Lind. Sheriff Thompson at once wired parties at Lind to be on the lookout and if Pall came to wire the office at once. Noth ing was heard until Saturday morning when a telegram was received that Pall's wherabouts was known. Sheriff Thompson and Deputy Gilson pro ceeded at once to Lind where they saw Sam Hutchinson, a stock man from lower Crab creek, who told the officers that Pall w.is at his ranch Thursday noon and left about two o'clock inquiring for Fish Hook ferry. It was Mr. Hutchinson's opinion that Pall was making for some point in Oregon. Sheriff Devonish was notified by wire of the route the man had taken and Sheriff Kllingsworth was also notified that Pall would probably visit Walla Walla about Saturday night. Officers at other points along the line were put on their guard. Last Sun day Win. Gibbons rode into Ritzville and informed the sheriff's office that he was out on bail. Gibbons came down from Harring ton Sunday to see W. R. Peters about a saddle he had arranged for the day chat Pall delivered the last bunch of cattle. He talked confidently about being able to prove his innocence of any complicity in the crime with which he was charged. Deputy sheriff McNamara went down to Walla Walla Monday evening to try to lo cate Pall. Testimonials. Bitzville, Wash., Sept. 1, 1898. Biuier-Bier Co., Bitzville. Wash.
