VOL. XII. TRKMS OF SUBSCRIPTION: One your W.OO Six months 1.00 Three months ■ - r >o Advertising rntes on application. Kntereii at the postofltec at Aberdeen, Wash., as second class mail matter. Notices of births, marriages or deaths printed free. I'orrespondence desired from all puns of the county. Short communications on topics of public" interest, when accompanied by tile name of the writer, will be inserted, the name preferrably but not necessarily for publication. JAMES F. OIRTON', Publisher. OHicial Paper of the City ot Aberdeen. Neal Dow, tho great opponent of in temperance, died last Saturday at his home in Portland, Maine, in tho 04th year of his age. Governor Rogers has made a good ap pointment in naming K. 0. McCrosky as regent of tlie agricultural collego, to 1111 one of the vacancies. The Negtos' Protective l'arty ticket is the fl'th one in the field in Ohio. This looks as though McLean was giving Manna a Konald for his Oliver. Massachusetts Democrats nominated George Fred Williams for governor unan imously, and squarely endorsed the Chicago platform. And that is the way the free silver sentiment is dying. The window glass combine, with a capitalization of $20,000,000, embracing all the principal plants in the country, is the latest combination to get a lead-pipe scinch on the increased tariff rates of the Dingley bill. The Spanish cabinet has resigned and a Liberal cabinet formed with Senor Sagasta at the head. The policy of the administration toward Cuba will be con ciliatory, with prospects of autonomy similar to that enjoyed by Canada. Ex-President Hcnj.imin Harrison is quoted as favoring municipal ownership of street railways, light and water plants, etc. Now that a good Republican has addid "respectability," as the P.-I. would say, to municipal ownership per haps other Republicans may overcome their timidity and also speak out. The Washingtonian asks, "If the con sumer pays the tariff why are several large manufacturing plants in Europe employing thousands of hands, making arrangements to move to the United States?" We don't know that they are, but. if so it is doubtless to get the bonus which the Dingley tariff gives "infant industries" like the sug.ir trust and the coal combine. Again has tho dark angel come into tho home of John Miller Murphy, the veteran editor of the Washington istan darj, and taken the brightest blossom from the home, Hose I'carl, the youngest of the family, eighteen years old, having been suddenly called to the better land. May his sorrow be tempered by the thought of loved ones on the other shore beckoning upward. With this issue the Herald begins its twelfth volume. Four of its eleven years have been under the present manage ment. As in the past so in tlie future the aim will be to give the news and to record events without fear, favor or pre judice, and to work for the good of its town, county, state and nation. How far it has done so the public shall judge, and if the verdict is favorable it will receive its patronage;-otherwise it is not enti tled to it. The Herald goes into more homes in Chehalis county than ever, con sequently is a desirable advertising me dium. It solicits patronage upon its merits, not as a mendicant, believing that it. gives value received. The Cosmopolis Enterprise, after doubl ing the price demanded for its own sub scription, declares that a young married man ought to accumulate a thousand dollars in ten years from a salary of one dollar a day and board. This would te $400 a year counting the two dollars a week extra allowed married men who board themselves, or $300 to be s|>ent for the living of himself, wife and growing family of children. This shows what kind of living the average gold bug ex pects the working man to enjoy, when he says is enough for rent, fuel, cloth ing, food, doctor bills, etc., of a growing family. Drs. Maybe and Mustbe. Yqp choose the old doctor before the young: one. Why? Because you don't want to entrust your life in inexperienced hands. True, the youngf doctor may be experienced. But the old doctor must be. You take no cbances with Dr. Maybe, when Dr. Mustbe is in reach. Same with medicines as with medicine makers — the long-tried remedy has your confidence. You prefer experience to experiment—when you are concerned. The new remedy may be good — but let somebody else prove It. The old remedy must be good — judged on Its record of cures. Just )ne more reason for choosing AYEH'B Sarsa parilla in preference to any other. It has been the standard household sarsaparllla for half a century. Its record Inspires confidence — ffO years of cures. If others may be good, Ayer's Sarsaparllla must be. You take no chances when you take AYEB'S Sarsaparllla. ABERDEEN HERALD State Lund Coin missi oner Robert Bridges proposes tho s'utc shall derive the benefit of its school and oilier lands, and is calling upon the railroads for rent for their rights of way over the same. One J. F. Norton, writing from Guata mala, in regard to (lie "awful" time llial country is having on necoi'nt of free silver, winds up bis tale of woe by say irg: "What makes matters worse is that there is little or no silver in circulation here." Ah! Tho attention of our state tlsli com missioner and legislative tlsli commis sion is called to a clipping from the Cathlamet Gazette, printed in another column, regarding the destruction of sieelhead salmon in the Columbia river. If fish wheels must bo permitted tho tlsli should be given half a chance to get around them. The old factional tight among the g. o. p. forces on the Harbor is getting hotter over tlie distribution of fedeial patronage. Let the war go on, it's fun for the rest of us, who aio looking for Senator Wilson to make some mistake that will only in tensify the bitterness and make victory for the opposition easier next year. Con servative men recognize good government when they see it, and are not over par ticular where it comes from so they get. it. Good government is obtained when | the officers are not controlled bv grafters. The Democratic Alliance, United Dem ocracy, Populists and labor organizations have nominated Henry George for mayor of Greater New York, in opposition to the candidates of the Tammany and Repub lican machines. Mr. George stands squarely upon the Chicago platform, and will inject the national issues into the campaign which the Tain many ites were afraid to do. Including Seth Low there are now four prominent candidates for the mayoralty, besides those of the Gold Democrats ami other minor bodies. The Cosmopolls Enterprise, after rusticating for the summer, again ap pears among our exchanges. W. F. Pattison is the editor, and his paper is always a welcome visitor, even though it is the rankest of the goldbug kind. Tak ing advantage of the drop in silver the price has been raised so that it now takes two silver dollars to pay for a year's subscription, whereas heretofore one was all that was required; this notwith standing that the standard of wages among its subscribers is stiil on the same old scale. The other day I.azard I're res asked the government to accept $2,000,000 in gold at .San Francisco and give them a like amount of currency from the New York sub-treasury, so they might save the exper.se of the exchange between the two points. The government is short of currency at New York and declined, and now the bankers and Secretary (iage are discussing tho proposition of "the gov ernment going into the banking business" and issuing gold certificate.* for tho ac commodation of tho bankers, at tho ex pense of the government. If gold is such a good thing let them use it. The trouble between the president of state university and the regents, which culminated last week in the dismissal of tho foimer, dates back several months, and appears to have been a contention over the school of psychology to be taught. Both sides appear to lie blame able. The regents should look after the finances and formulate a general policy for the university, and if a president can not be secured who will carry out the general policy without quarrelling over psychology, that study better be elimin ated and left for private institutions. The public is more interested in tho teaching at our state institutions of the three It's and the practical sciences. A late statement of operations by tho French system of postal savings banks from Jan. 1, 1882, to Dec. 111, 1806, is as follows: Number of depositors, 20,049,- 538; amount of deposits, 3,404.072,171 francs; number of withdrawals, 10,587,- 503; amount of withdrawa15,2,757,270,087 francs; amount of purchases of govern ment securities, 70,981,341 francs; excess of deposits over withdrawals and pur chases of government securities, 030,420,- 143 francs; amount of interest accrued ABERDEEN, CHEHALK COUNTY, WASHINGTON, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1897. to deposilots, 148,592,500 francs The situation up to I>ec. 111, 1800, was: Num ber ol depositors, 2,080,730; property of depositors, 784,850,207 francs. The num ber of depositors on July .'ll, 1807, was 2,825,220,—Chicag0 Record. John R, McLean announces that he is not a candidate for U, S. senator # from Ohio. His powerful influence will be for the Democratic ticket just the same, and in all probability also for (ien. A. J. Warner, who has entered the senatorial race. The Oregonian linds much comport in one promised effect of the lie* tariff, lis opinion is: "lleavv importations of working people from Canada and Cuba and the threatened transplanting here of Knglish and German factories will dis turb few enlightened Americans. This is one way to building up manufactur ing." Yes, one way; not a very good way. Does it help the unemployed al ready in the country to get work? "Heavy inportations of working people," to be shot down when tliev rise to de mand half way Christian treatment, is the trouble just now in Pennsylvania.— Taeoma News. Hall's Catarrh Ctire is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a consti tutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucus surfaces of the sys tem, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers, that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of Testimo nials. Address F. J. CHENKY & Co., £*"Sold by druggists 75c ' Toledo, O. Save tlie Stecllioail*. The closo season in August is only a myth. It neither furnishes protection tor the fish nor stimulates propagation. Wo have reliable information to the fact that one firm of wheel owners at the Dalles have caught lecenlly as high as eight carloads of steelheads in their wheels in one wick. The fish caught are black in color and are ripe for spawning. These fish are frozen and shipped East. This valuable species of food fish ought to be protected. After running the gauntlet of the innumerable devices in the Columbia river, for over a hundred and twenty miles, the fish find themselves at the gates of the spawning ground, ready to be caught by the ton, in almost the act of reproduction. It is simply the deliberate murder of pregnant salmon life in their natural nursery. Can any honest think ing man condon this wanton destruction of a valuable natural asset of the great commonwealth of Oregon and Washing ton? Can the Washington fish commit tee overlook this self apparent abuse in their report to tho next legislature? We think not. Again, not only are these fish caught by a method which is in itself intensely destructive, but in their cap tine all the ingenuity of mankind is de vised to ensnare them in the only spot which nature has provided as a passage way thiough the rapids, on their ascent to the spawning grounds above, Escape is iinpossibla. Urged, by tho behests of nature, forward their capture is inevita ble. What is to be the effect on the permanent supply of these species? The steelheads arc tlie best frozen fish we possess for expott purposes, These fish came in the liver about the first lo the middle of .August, and even later, and leisurely made their way over the Cas cades to the rapids at the Dalles, where they arrived just in time to be caught at the opening of the fall season. Wherein does the protection to the fish come in by the close season in August ? As long as tho catching of salmon,by any means, is allowed at the spawning grounds the ! spending of the peoples' money for hatch ery purposes should be stopped, Artifi cial propagation, at best, is only an auxiliary lo natural spawning. An ex periment in this river of uncertain merit, to say tke least, and can never be hoped to so supplant natural reproduction as to allow tho wholesale destruction of Ash to go forword unchallenged. No worse crime could be possibly inflicted on a people, as to rob them ot one of their chief dependencies for a livelihood, under the sanction of a legislative enactment secured through the venality of legisla tors by corrupt men.—Cathhunet Gazett. COUNTY ITEMS. FROM HOQITIAM. Snpt. Nat. MclCillip was encountered on out streets l>y many of liis friends Wednesday. . Steamer Del Norte, fiom San Francisco, arrived at Iloquiam Sunday with a large consignment of freight, and put to sea again Tuesday. Tlie new four masted schooner Defiance I recently launched from Cupt. Matthews' i ship yard, is about loaded and will go to sea in a few days. A meeting of prominent business men was held Tuesday in the Heermans building to discuss matters relating to the intended extension of tho railroad from Aberdeen to Koquinm. Cireat enthusi asm prevailed. Among the hum of saws and the gen eral hustle of industry was heard, last Tuesday, several heavy blasts that fairly shook the earth around the foot of J street. Men were blasting snags from tho site of the new shingle mill. Proposals for furnishing rock for the Grays Harbor jetty will be again adver tised by the government, which will in- j elude the rock heretofore found on the Ilumptulips river. Tho acceptance of that rock is a good thing for lfoquiam and will insure us a railroad at no very distant period. Suit has been commenced in the super- , ior court of this county by the Grays ' Ifarbor company to eject Thos. McNally, I Ed. Drum and Geo. l'arker from a half section of land in the "suburbs" of Ho- j quiam. Tho defendants in the action are ' old settlers upon the land in question, : having lived upon the land since 1880,! and have made valuable improvements I thereon. "Ifeah dein bells ! At ( that time wedding bells will peal forth j and proclaim to the world the marriage i of Miss Elizabeth Lavina Fe&enfeld to j Alfred \\ illiam Keed. The ceremony will take place at the lesidcnce of the j bride's parents, for which a large number ' of invitations have been extended to nu merous friends. The Iloquiam Cornet Band is an aggre gation that is rapidly assuming gigantic proportions. What space there is left in lfoquiam unfilled by its actual corporeal substance is crammed brim full of sound. On almost any quiet moonlight evening and on every gala occasion, clear to the very eornery and even through the crev- j ices of the city's limits inav be heard tho j sweet, plaintive strains of music that j only the Iloquiam band can discourse. FROM GRAND FORKS. The rains have put a stop to potato digging. Miss Josie Wilson is visiting on the Wynoochee. And now "Ma" won't have to make half so many pies. Miss l,u/.ello Coles left Friday last for her school at Montesano. Charles Wilson has rented thePennoyer place at Aberdeen Gardens. The Recorder takes exceptions to your correspondent. This is perfectly right. Your correspondent does not strive to please the republican papers. Go it, "Jeems." The Recorder's correspondent grows sarcastic over the election of road super visor, and then he grows spleeny over the school meeting; but the people have spoken, and if it does not suit it must be remembered that there are other things that did not suit. Do not criticize or you may get more than you bargain for. The Bulletin is after Auditor .Sells with a sharp stick, as it supposed, but sad to relate the sharp of the stick was broken off and the editor couldn't make his point. At the expiration of his term Mr. Sells' record will recommend him to the people of this county in a way that will make the Bell of the Republican party turn Green with envy. The <Jlil Soldiers' Colony scheme is attracting much attention all over the United States. Letters arrive from all sections, and the favorable comments are a source of gratification to the projector. There are thousands in the large cities who are anxious to test the proposition and there is now 110 doubt as to the practicability of the colony and no fear as to the government giving them the grant. If Grand Forks has not been heard from for a couple of weeks it is not be cause we have nostiring themes to write about. We were waiting for the devel opment of our-gold mines and for the first report of its managers. It is called the Prosperity mine, in hopes the name will beget confidence. A fine bed of black sand has been struck, but as yet no stock has been sold. We waited in yain for our evolution friend to write up the whole of the goldbtig excitement for the Recorder, but he appears to bo new at the business and lets some important items pass without notice Why, he even failed, in his last, to tell how Mr. Ham ilton's |>et calf got looso and sucked the wrong cow! From Elma Chronicle: J. E. Hart, of Cedarville, brought a whole wagon load of ripe tomatoes to town Tuesday, which ha found no diffi culty in disposing of at good prices. We have had the pleasure this week of feasting on homo made cheese, the pro duct of the home dairy of Ex-Commis sioner Coy, that is a little ahead of any thing in that line we have seen. Mr. Coy and his excellent wife certainly un derstand the art of making fine cheese and, perhaps, might bo induced to estab lish a neighborhood factory. It would certainly prove a good thing for that locality if they would. From MonU'saiio Viiletto. • If there is a school teacher in the ■ county out of a job, County Supt. December, amounting to over $700. This is about all of the old indebtedness owing to the employes on the road. The burned Kstus mill machinery, which was purchased by S. A. Beach, of Rochester, for shipment to that place, is now in the hands of the sheriff 011 the old judgment held by the Northwestern Lumber Company, of Iloquiam, against Beach. The machinery is loaded on two cars, and was about to depart yesterday, when levied 011 by the sheiifT. The N.P. will get $3.00 a day while the cars arc standing here. The old story of Proniotlious is a para ble. Prometheus was on terms of inti macy with the goils. From them lie stole (iie, and gave it to men. For this sin he was bound to the rocks of Mount Caucasgus, and vultures were set upon him. They only ate his liver. This grew again as fast as it was peeked away. Are his suflciings to bo imagined. Take a modern interpretation of the parable. There is no cooking without fire. In cooking and eating the mischief lies. The stomach is overtasked, the bowels become clogged, they cannot dispose of the food that is given them. The impur ities back up on the liver. Then come the vultures —the torments of a diseased liver. Dr. l'ierco's Golden Medical Dis covery is more than equal to the vultures of dyspepsia and its kindred diseases. There is 110 more need of suffering from dyspepsia than there is of hanging one's self. .Sold by all medicine dealers the world over.
