The average county has paid $2,000,000 for its fences—all paid by inhabitants—you and yourn eighbor. Did you know this before? Such an immense sum of money seems in credible, yet it is the correct amount. Also it is a fact that fences cost more than all other farm improvements combined! It is absolutely essential to the preservation of your property and stock that you have good fences and keep them in good order. This fence question is always pressing itself upon you, and the stupendous aggregate cost of fences renders the subject worth the most careful con sideration. Untold trouble has been experi enced for many years and the general advance along the line of improve ment has resulted in the widespread substitution of wire fencing for the various forms of wood fences. But with the new era of wire fences the old, old fact that anything is only as strong as its weakest part has been time and again conspicuously demon strated. Wire fencing in all its var ious applications to different pur poses is undoubtedly taking the lead in the construction of the world's fences today. This is so because it is the most economical and most dur able, even in its earlier and cruder forms. The great drawback to all iron fencing has been the difficulty of se curely fastening the joints (wire to wire) so that thev will not slip. These joints have always slipped. They constitute the one weak point. If they become loose the whole fence aoon goes. That has been every one's experience and is the base of all trouble with wire fencing. Recently a genius solved the prob lem by inventing a clamp which binds the wire and bends and "an chors" a joint into perfect security. The thing is so simple that people wonder why someone did not think of 1 it before. But the important point is j that the clamp does its wonderful work unerringly, and fjom now on all wire fences can lie made tenfold more durable. Of course the big parent company that secured the patent for this wonderful "anchor clamp" is having a phenomenal success. "An chor" fences are multiplying like hot cakes everywhere, for the discovery of the "anchor clamp" in wire work is comparable to the deed of the man who invented the head to the ordinary pin of commerce, and an old-fash ioned wire fence can be converted into an "anchor" fence if you have some of the little "anchor clamps" and a pair of pinchers. The Portland Anchor Fence Company, which has its headquarters at 742 Nicolai street, Portland, Or., controls the sale of "anchor" fences in the Northwest, and they send very interesting pamphlets and pictures, telling all about fences, free of cost, to anyone who sends them his address. CATARRHpCT A Constitutional Affection. [ Sprays, washes, powders, salves, medicated tobacco and cigarettes, however long and persistently J(. used, do not cure Catarrh. They relie v temporarily MMumn the inflammation in the throat and nose, and enable 1 you to breathe more easily and freely, but the con- " tinual rush of impure blood to these parts keeps up the irritation ana ultimately produces ulceration of iWaffY the glands, when the breath becomes exceedingly offensive and the soft bones of the nose are frequently destroyed. The catarrhal inflammation extends over the entire surface of the mucous membrane, or inner skin ; the stomach, kidneys and lungs are often involved; the whole system soon becomes affected by the rapid absorption of poisonous matter into the blood, and the disease that you had hoped to cure with simple local remedies, assumes a dangerous form. " HIGH PRAISE. i Rev. Enoch Hill, of Grand Junc tion, lowa, Indorses Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People. From the Erie Headlight, Grand Junction, la. No higher praise can be offered nor better references given concerning the virtues of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People than the many voluntary testimonials from minis ters of the gospel which have come from all parts of the country. One of these is from Rev. Enoch Hill, pastor of the M. E church of Grand .Junction, lowa, who says: "I am a firm believer in the effi cacy of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People, the remedy having been used in my family with highly grati fying results. For three or four years I was a sufferer from general debility. I seemed to be lacking in vitality, was tired out most of the time and sleep gave me no rest or refreshment. I was troubled with headache much of the time and my illness incapaci tated me for energetic work in my pastorate. "A sister-in-law living in Nebraska, who had suffered very much and who had used Dr. William's Pink Pills with good results, recommended them to me and I decided to try them. I had taken but two or three doses of the pills when I found that they were helping me, and further use of the remedy brought such relief that lam glad to offer this public recommendation of Dr. William's Pink Pills for Pale People in the interest of suffering humanity. "My wife was troubled much as I was and the pills also proved of great benefit in her case. I have recommended the pills to many whom I have met in my work and am always pleased to indorse the medicine, the excellence of which has been established within my own observation." Signed REV. In spite of all bis pious, Funston was all but frozen from the presence of the Cuban Junta. Tbe story tbut 1 atn now going to tfell was tbut related to ine by Funston himself during the ten days tbut I was his guest at Sun Fernando, immediately after he had received the single star that raised him from a col onelcy to a brlgadiershlp in the volun teers. As he told the story on himself, and as It Illustrate* tbe extremely quiet audacity of the "bantam" general from Kausas, there can be no barm in retell ing the narrative to-day. "We don't need recruits," said the head of the New York Junta, "and we can't avail ourselves of your services, but we are looking for a competent— a highly competent artillery officer. If you know of such a mau we will feel deeply grateful If you will send him to us." Funston's eyes became alight as If by magic. "An artillery officer?" he repeated. "Then 1 think, gentlemen, that perhaps I may suit you." "Do you know anything about tbe management of cannon?" questioned tbe head of the Junta. In a twinkling Funston bad his watch In band. "Gentlemen," he answered regretful ly, "I have an appointment that de mands the rest of to-day and much of to-morrow. May I ask another meeting with yon for the day after to-morrow? If this suits your convenience, I shall then be glad to prove my qualifications as an artillery officer." Receiving the assent of the Cuban Junta, Funston withdrew. On the fol lowing morning be visited Fort Hamil ton, I believe It was, where he made the casual ncquulntance of some of the artillery officers there stationed. With the skill of one somewhat accustomed to journalistic interviewing, he suc ceeded In gaining from the officers some vague Ideas of the theory of bal listics. Of each Item of Information he made mental note. At the same time he secured a list of tbe best works on the subject of artillery manipulation. Thus scantily equipped, yet with all the assurance of the man who knows his opportunity, and who knows he can seize it, Fuuston presented himself be fore the Junta at the appointed hour. He came in with the breathless air of one fresh from a previous and almost conflicting appointment. Obeying the request of the Junta to explain what he knew about artillery practice, the young Kansan rattled off all the prattle about big guns that he had picked up the day before. 80 glibly did he talk of matters of which he did not possess evey an academic smattering that he was commissioned on the spot as an artillery oltlcer in the Cuban service. He was given passage on the next fili bustering steamer that left this coun try "On my way to Cuba." Gen. Funston told me at Kail Fernandp. In the early summer of 18U9, "I locked myself In my stateroom, spending all ui.v waking hours In devouring the works I had been recommended to read by United States artillery officers. Before reach ing the Cuban coast I tossed all but one or two of the smaller books overboaro and went ashore. In our first serious engagement against Spanish troops 1 found myself In charge of two small pieces of field artillery. The fellow who bandied the other gun was a for mer non-commissioned officer In the Spanish army. 1 directed him as best I could, and sighted the other piece. "That battle resulted In a Cuban vic tory, but I folt sure that I had made a dismal failure. Gen. Gomes came stalk ing up to me with the same stern air that always struck terror Into the hearts of his subordinates. Guilty conscience made me feel certain that, for wasting ammunition, I was to be shot dead within an hour. Gen. Gomes extended his hand, complimenting me upon my splendid service of the guns! You see, most of the Cubans had less knowledge of artillery practice than I had contrived to glean on my few days' voyage to Cuba. That sergeant of mine was a genuinely good fellow. He held his tongue."—H. I. Hancock, in Leslie's Weekly. Mixing Brains with the Soil. Booker T.
