THURSDAY, AUGUST 15. 1007 BIRD'S EVE VIEW OF ABERDEEN, WASHINGTON Some Things Are Worse Than War. AR is dreadful, liiul yet there is something far more j M M I dreadful. Far more dreadful is it that the country be disgraced, that THE FLAG BE DISHONORED, that no longer does it unfurl its folds in joy and tri l uniph amid the nations of the earth. Far more dreadful than war is it to have it said the country is torn asunder, the country is menaced with ruin or death. As tho father ] of the child should sacrifice life to save the family in hours of peril, so must tho citizen step gladly upon the battlefield, exclaiming, "Not at least until I am dead shall my country cease to bo the fair nation tha 1 Almighty has bidden it to be." Take men as they are and peoples as thev are. Preach to them i justice and righteousness, but let them know that when justice and | righteousness are trampled under foot war shall he waged IN DE FENSE OF JUSTICE A\ 1) RIGHTEOUSNESS. We are not going to set aside our army and navy, bound to the ; defense of our country, as we are not going to set aside in cities and states the policeman and t'l • magistrate. (lod is the father of men, \ * I tho father of love, lie is uls.> the God of righteousness and justice, i tuul in his own eternal counsels he defends righteousness and justice«! AND WILLS THAT WK DO LIKEWISE. Terrible is war. Fearful is the battle, yet when the battle reaches righteousness, when its purp >se is holy and noble, the battle is SUB LIME. Nothing is more grand, more magnificent, than the advance of tens of thousands of men bearing their lives in their hands in i defense of a just and noble cause. IN THAT MOMENT THEY ARE LIFTED FAR ABOVE THE COLD j INSPIRATIONS OF EARTH; THEY ASCEND IN THE NOBILITY OF 1 THEIR SACRIFICE TO THE VERY SKIES. A battle for justice is a high lesson to the whole people—that; there is something more worthy of love, more worthy of life than gold and silver, than counting houses and ships of commerce. It evokes into action the most beauteous of virtues. It freshens and strengthens the whole SPIRITUAL LIFE of a nation. May war seldom come. May the need of war seldom confront tho country, but, withal, we are permitted to ask, What so well as a just war will bring home to tho whole people the sense of righteousness and awaken in them the spirit of DISINTERESTED SELF SAC RIFICE so necessary to the life of a great and high minded nation? ; The World Will Some Day Be Using Wingfs. By Dr. ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL, Inventor of the Telephone. j| Y expectation is that an airship will be perfected capable of I making 150 TO 200 -MILES AN HOUR. My I ~ A opinion, however, is that the next step in aerial flight ' will take the form of such improvements as will mako possible the creation of AERIAL HAITI. The actual problem of the navigation of the air has already been solved by tho Wright brothers. Naturally, there will be development along com mercial lines. MY BELIEF IS THAT AMERICA WILL BE THE FIRST COUNTRY TO PERFECT AERIAL BATTLESHIPS. T hope to be able to add much to what is known of aerial flight FLYING MACHINES WILL J)E EVERYWHERE. Tho de velopments of the next few months will bo unprecedented, but tho lr. .- f ratine point is thnt onlv few know HOW NEAR America i-> right now t>> solving a questi"H which will revolutionize warfare throughout tho world —I moan the construction of a PRACTICAL aerial battleship. by experiments at Capo Breton island this sum mer. My problem this year will bo to propel my kites with a specially constructed engine of fifteen horsepower, weighing 120 pounds. I hope to get a machine of tho HEAVIER THAN AIR variety that will support a man and tho necessary equipment to operate it at low rather than high velocity. Last December I con structed a vehicle that supported itself and a man in a ten mile breeze. I now want to fly a machine earning an engine at ten or lifteen miles an hour. I am coruident that it will not bo long before SOME PRIMERS j still use old style material with good effect. What we use is the best for each job we handle.
