JACKSON, Executive Secretary 901 Mission Bldg. MMn 0290 THE NORTHWEST ENTERPRISE, THURSDAY, JANUARY 1, 1931: Negro Recognized As Part 01' Nation Thn American NGQ'TO ha: pro-g ur‘;~'~wl to the point where he is recw Jznized us- an Inwernl TIP-Vt of the, nation with :13} the duties and respon hillilllivs of Ullu‘l‘ itrmzf‘: in the pop— ulalien. The Negro is no lcnrzor an outcast. his cause is no ionizer one for eccentrics. be is icing l'ecugniZL‘d as an iult-sral part. an important‘ section, of the nation. Today over one-fifth of the Ne-l woos in America ‘.i.'e above the old Mason and Dixouliuu and one-third liVe in cities or towns. Thus the Negro is distriuuted throughout the nation, and is no longer cxdusivcly a resident of the rural South. Accumulated Wealth. 2 Billion While the World war and the northward migration culled forth these changes, the race itself was: making progress. it is now estab lished in ownership of farms and in both skilled and unskilled occupa tions. Negroes are owning small businesses and are found in chants of a few large enterprises. The-re are Negro millionaires. In two gen erations Negroes have become liter ‘ate, in many instances well-educated. self-supporting, increasingly respect— ‘ed and self-respecting. 1 A recent government survey re ports that the accumulated wealth of Negroes in America amounts to two billion dollars ($2,000,000.000). that 700,000 Negroes own their own homes, 232.000 own farms and 70,- 000 own or operate business enter prises; that there are 73 New banks iwith a captilaization of $6,250,000 doing an annual business of over $100,000,000; that there are 48.000 Negro teachers. over 1000 of them ’giving instruction in institutions of higher learning. I While the mass has been strut:- glinz upward a small number of Co]- | ored people have achieved distinction [judged by any standard. Dr. E. E. [Just is not a great Negro biologist. he is a. great biologist. Professor lCzu-ver. of Tuskegee. the peanut and lswwt potato wizard, begins to take [his place with the eccentric geniuses lin science. Singers and pointers and l Negro artists generally are becoming the vogue. Education Improving No phase of American education has gone forward more rapidly dur [ing‘ the past decade and a half than of Negro schools and colleges. This is partly due to the fact that there Were such inadequate provisions at ‘the beginning of this uoriod, but the .rapid promos: is a significant sign {of thé times whatever the previous condition. There are four great Negro uni versity centers of today: Washing— ton. with Howard university under ‘the leadership of a Negro president. ‘Mordecni W. Johnson; Nashville, it"hel‘e Meharry Medical college is ‘building an entire new houpital and laboratory plant immediately adjoin ing a revived and reorganized Fisk university; Atlanta, where a group of colleges of distinguished history are forming a confederation under ithe historic title of Atlanta univer lsity, including the strong undergrad uate colleges of Morehouse and Spel n.an. and New Orleans where denom inational colleges and a hospital are merging: their resources. In no phase of life is the interde pendence of the races more clearly seen than in health. Disease knows no color line. Germs do not obey Jim Crow laws. Tuberculosis, pneu monia, malaria and tyghoid spread quickly from one group to another. .Modern public health has made us irealize how vitally a part of our icommon national life the. Negro is. Negro death and sickness are being decreased to the benefit of that group and of the nation as 3* whole. . New Attitude in Anne?!“ 1 The general attitude toward the Negro in America has‘ clung-ed fun-i dnmentally. in spite of individual distrees and still prevalent prejudice. the Negro. to a degree unbelievable half a century ago. is recognized as a‘ member of the nation, and as a part‘ of the American stream of life, not laomethim,r detached and uide from it. And the Negro and his friends. while still insisting upon funda. mental rights, should shift their em phasis to obligations. The opportunity is presented. now for the first time in the history of the nation. for the Negro to assume his place as a regular integrel part of American life. To hold and justify that place the Negro must work hard. While continuing to fight for his rights he must accept the duties and obligations of American life. lNegroes must struggle without rest until as a minimum the whole race is literate, clean. orderly and de pendable.
