Optical pres ent* barred GO ON, EAT YOUR COSTLY MEAT, BUT GET If you have some slight doubt as to whether the Taft- Alilrich-Cannon-llttmphrey tariff increases the cost of your living or not, try to explain this: During the month of August. American sirloin of beef sold for 19'/i cents in London and for 28 cents in Seattle. None of the rot about middlemen, in tease in gold pro duction, great rise ill wanes and similar insincere twaddle explains this difference in price. Ihe only explanation that holds water is the robber tariff. Oreat Britain levies no tariff duties on meat products. In the London market the American beef trust must meet competition from Australia, New Zealand and South America. The tariff protects the trust front such compe tition at home. With the tariff abolished American meats would sell at home for no more than abroad. Of course when thei-c facts arc made known the shriek goes up that the trust cannot pay decent wages without the privilege of robbing the people. Hut this shriek is the biggest lie in all the tariff argu ments. The census shows that the average wage paid in the packing indu-trj is $570 a year, a trifle over $10 a week. How high a tariff is needed to enable the trust to pay such wage*? All told, there were wage earners employed iti the year l'W in the packing industry, less than one-tenth of one per cent of the population. If, once a year, a tax of about 60 cents a head were levied on the meat consumer* of the United States, the tax would mise a sum equal to the total wages paid by the beef trust. Yet the tariff enables the trust to tax meat consumers more than that every week in the year. NEXT TO THIS HOME EDITION IHCTMENTSIN DYNAMITE CASE lfl> I hIM I'feaa I asartl W'f#.) BOSTON. "Hon John 8 M'Millin. lio< lie Harbor, Waah.: I < partnient libb reminded ord- maklnic Ho< he Harbor a money order office. W. K. HUMPHREY." Ye-, friends, the honorable Humphrey is right when he says: "Experience counts in congress." Tin folk 1 - at Ko»he Harlior, across the sound, want and need a money order department. They petitioned for one, and the postoffice department at Washington grant id their prayer. It took the broad view that the people of Roche Harbor wanted, needed and ought to have a money order department. Bui John S. McMillin, who )>• an old line politician and th< bos: of Roche llarl>or. didn't want a money order depart ment. It would hurt his business. "Get order cancelled a-- you did before," he commanded over the wire. And "I Am a Trimmer" Humphrey obediently did as he was told, and wired back: "Order >- cancelled." Here frit-!i' 1 i a concrete example of the value of "ex perience in congress." An inexperienced congressman, receiving stich an order fr«.m I'.'■ Mi Millin, would have blundered all over Washing ton like a chicken with its head off He would not have known how ti> go a! >tit it. An inexperienced congressman positively couldn't have done it. An honest one wouldn't. Mut Humphrey could and did. "Experience counts in congress." And so the order was cancelled. It -|>- ik volumes fur the broad spirit of the folks of Roche Harlxir that, though they do not get their money order departn •nt the\ do not wi-h Humphrey any hard luck They only hope he chokes Indeed, they love him—the way a brewer loves the Anti-Saloon league. Every time our congress man'" name is mentioned, they utter loud cheers (for Dan I .andon). It may not be apparent to the l>one headed and imbecile person why the folk- of Roche Harbor were so dead set on a money order department. Why, the sillv people had an idea it might facilitate the transportation of money to and from the town and make it easier to buy and sell in neighboring towns and cities. Seattle, for instance. And there were merchants right here in Seattle who actu ally hoped that Roche Harlior would get a money order depart ment and that -ome Rcu he Harbor money might find its way to Seattle. But Boss McMillin fooled em. He knows what's l>est for Roche Harbor. Why should Roche Harbor spend its money in Seattle when it can get anything it needs, from a paper of pins to a threshing machine, at Boss McMillin's general mer chandise store? So Ito-s McMillin wires "I-Am-a-Trimmer" Humphrey at Washington to hang the binger on the money order depart ment. And Humphrey does a- he's told. \n inexperienced and honest congressman might have told 80-- McMillin, with some heat, to go to Sj»okane. He might entertain absurd notions about its being his duty to serve, not Ross McMillin, but all the people of thi- district. But Humphrey, out of a large experience, knows whose hand to lick. For has not McMillin for years been a large noise in state politics? Wasn't he for years picked regularly as delegate to the national republican convention? And, when Gov. Mead was elected through the influence of the railroad interests, didn't he appoint McMillin to the first railroad com mission in the state? And was he kicked off the commission? Certainly not. He resigned—the way Judge Hanford did. And isn't he a rich man? You bet. He owns the big lime works, doesn't he? And most of the land? Yes. And the -tore? Sure. He's the leading citizen of Roche Harbor, isn't he? No doubt about it. And a money order department would hurt his business, wouldn't it? Of course. It's unreasonable of his humble neighbors to want to do anything that would hurt it? They ought to be ashamed of themselves. Well, then, what's all the bother about? ***** We've used up a lot of perfectly good words to explain an act which could be summed up thus tersely and truthfully: A mean, petty, piffling act of a mean, petty, piffling peanut politician.
