THE STORY OE VAIN CHASE OVER THREE STATES IN SEARCH OF MISSING GIRL HOLDING UP A GYPSY CARAVAN NEAR MINERAL POINT, WIS., IN SEARCH O* KIDNAPED CATHERINE WINTERS NEWSPAPER MEN JOIN IN HUNT FOR 9-YEAR-OLD CHILD THOUGHT STOLEN By G. R. Pulford Staff Correspondent. MILWAUKEE. Wl*. May 10 —I have spent five days look ing for a kidnaped rhlld' It wa* not a <-**« where the whole nation wa* stirred almost to frenxy. a* In the kidnaping of Charlie Ho*s or of Billy Whltla. but It was exactly as serloua, because a dear little girl had been stolen —her father and mother were like craxy peo ple. and her father had offered $2,000 reward. KIDNAPED BY GYPSIES! That Is what Dr. W A. Win ters, of Newcastle, Ind.. de clared after hla little Catherine, aged 9. disappeared In th« strangest manner late In the third week of April. It Is remarkable how quickly, also convincingly, the cry of "gyp*!**" goes up when a child l.a* been lost a day or two. The spring had arrived at Newcastle and two or three caravans of dark skinned, dark eyed people had passed through the little town or near the town lately. The Newcastle chief of police dispatched by wire the cry of "eypsles" to all the near towna and to the neighboring states. In two days the newspapers for 600 miles either way declared "gypsies," and the chiefs of police of Chicago, Indianapolis. Milwaukee and St. Louis sent their plain clothes men far Into the suburbs looking for gypsies and —stolen Catherine Winters, aged 9, of Newcastle, Pa. Simultaneously I ws* assign ed to Join the hunt, to drive In an automobile on the track* of gypsies who had been within 200 miles of Chicago; to use my special deputy *herlff com mission boldly ; to take pictures of this plftureaque ' has*, and then to tell In a story for The Star what that chase looked like. • • • Only those who have partici pated In a search for a etoien child can appreciate its thor oughness. Spurred, perhaps, by a reward, hundreds of men cover the country, on foot. In buggies and automobiles, form ing a human network, through which it seems impossible for a kidnaper to break. The temper of the searchers Is often grimly shown by a sug gestive coll of rope on a bugcy sent. For Catherine Winters the hunt covered Indiana, Illlnol* and southern Wi*con*ln Wher ever a hand of pypHie* »a» re ported there went the se;inh roof of Valu he tlme-te*ted, wot Id-tried, hon riedy proof of its power to relic, ickly, safely, iiurely, the liea< he*, the Hour tn te, the |r» 'it* nod the fatigue of biliou*rn ill bo found in every done iEECHAM't PiLLS dold eT«rwli«ft. BESSIE C MEHRIAM AND DAUGHTER, CHARLOTTE, WMJ IS "THE HONE OF CONTENT ION" IN SENSATIONAL DIYORCI CASE. I SAN FRANCISCO. May 10 — Bpeclal.—An army scandal. Bessie C. Mer rlam. on a charge of cruelty. The trouble Is alleged to have begun In 1911 at Jackson bar racks, near New Orleans. Mrs. Merrlam's name was linked with that of Major Clarence Murphy. During the absence of Capt. Merrlam on duty on the Te*as border from April to June, 1911, Major Murphy frequented Jack son barracks. Later, after Capt. Merrlam't return from Galveston, Mri. Merrlam was directed by him to leave the barracks. She went with her daughter to In dianapolis, and In time received a notification from Major Sam uel A. Kephart, commandant, not to return. An appeal to the war department by the wife ended when the authorities sus tained the action of Major Kep hart. Mrs. Merrlam denied that her relations with Major Murphy had been more than friendly. "He was a friend of my hus band's," she said, "and my hus band had asked me to receive him.
