Richard DO l believe that an evangelist who, like Billy Sunday, can in less than five year* collect $JOO,OUO in freewill offerings (not including the $35.t100 "good hye collection he lifted in Pittsburgh the other day) is sincere a reader asks isn't he "just out for the stuff ? In a certain sense 1 guess we're all out for tlie stuff; we have to be. "The stuff" is society's main measure of power it's the one yardstick we have by which we can determine whether we're "making: good" or not. The man in the ditch gets his dollar and a quarter a day and the president of the steel trust gets his hundreds ;» day, and it's thus we indicate the difference in capacity between them. In our dollar scheme of things, what other way of differentiation is there? So I don't in the least object to Billy Sunday taking, in money, the indisputable testimony that his work is appre ciated. He forces no one to contribute the offering when he passe* his hat is wholly voluntary. True, it may be made while the donor is in an unusual Mate of excitement, the result of a w hipped up and not alw i\ ♦ lasting enthusiasm But everybody who goes to a Billy Sunday meeting goes with foreknowledge of what it i* like Billy doesn't issue false prospectuses, lie delivers the goods that his advance agents advertise. The hat isn't passed under any spell of unexpected hocus pocus. Moreover, I'm inclined to think Billy is well worth the money IsL Kot that I endorse all he says or doe* -Billy is about the last man on earth I'd pick as'a tutor in either ethics or sociology, to say nothing of theology. He sees the problem of redemption only as the simple thing of beating up a personal devil, punching into softne-s mans sin-hardened heart and offering as a bait to earthly virtue the lure of mansions in the skv I happen to view it as one of far greater intricacy and difficulty— as one nut requiring less personal virtue but fir more social co-operation in the building of the Kingdom, tv t itt a far-off milleninum but right down here on earth, week days as well as Sundays, and, so far as possible, p <1 «1 That there are millions to whom Billy's individualistic orthodoxy makes a powerful appeal is proved by his aston ishing audiences and amazing "conversions —and I guess they've as good a right to their view as I to mine In any event, we've got (if we're fair) to take our hats; ofi to Billv for doing a fine job according to his lights. Any man who can go into the average sin-crusted, greed ridden, God-forgetting modern Gomorrah and in a few weeks rip its selfishness into shreds and hang the pieces out to dry. as Billy does, doesn't need to be defended very hard when some sour-souled scoffer in a back seat arises on hind _|egs to suggest that maybe Billy is merely "out for the stuff." Of course he's* out for that. But he's also out for the stuffing of our fat-witted American complacency; and the way he knocks it out is surely glorious, as we'll all see if he comes to Seattle this fall, as expected HOUSE MARINE committee has takan two y*r% to dla Mvar that you can't unacrambl# tha shipping truat without spoiling tha agga.
