New York Critics

last year won the Grand Prix at
the International Film Festival in
Cannes. had its American pre
miere last night at the Avenue
Playhouse. Written by Ingmarl
Bergman and featuring three of_

great delicacy by Alf Sjtiberg.
Dorothy Masters in the Daily
News writes that “the Swedish
drama's sinister magnetism is a
new high in cinematic coercion.
Never before has it been achieved
with such great artistry or such
prolonged intensity."' In PM. Ce
cilia Ager states that the Swedish
film is a work of art. “but more
lthan that—it is a deep and haunt
ling experience that achieves a
positive good . . . It is as esthet
ically rewarding as it is spiritual
ly stirring." Cue magazine terms
is “a rarely beautiful and deeply
touching study of the tortured
emotional upheavals of adoles
cence." .
Dissenting with his colleagues.
Bosley Crowther of the Times
finds the picture dour and un
healthy in tone and that the tech
nique of film story telling em
ployed is surprisingly antique. He
criticizes the heavy and sinister
[shading with the lights, and the
lgrotesque angles in almost every
other scene, and ends by saying
that "it resembles nothing so
much as an old German film."
