ANTHOIY’S HOSPITAL 1Giani' Whaling fiFaci'ory ls ‘Floa'l'ing City The building‘ of “Kosmos” III" has been followed with keen in terest in Scandinavian shipping circles, not only because of the size of the ship but also because it has involved a race for time. According to international regu lations_ the whale-hunting season starts on December 8 and ends on April 8, and the ship had there fore to be ready in time before the first-mentioned date if the owner and his hundreds of work ers were not to lose the income of an entire season. Moreover. Nor way and the world would lose the much needed addition of vital food products which such a ship is cap able of producing. The Gotaverken shipyard was working against rather heavy odds. The launching. which took place on April 9. 1947, was de layed owing to the severe cold last winter. and the scarcity of material and man power, partly caused by the fact that the yard was engaged on several other big tasks such as the building of the passenger liner “Stockholm" and the cruiser “Tre Kronor" as well as many tankers and cargo liners. However, thanks to the coopera tion on the part of all concerned— the shipyard. the sub-deliverers in Sweden and Norway as Well as the authorities ~ the Gotaverken managed to deliver the ship on time. In the later phase of the work the yard received most val uable assistance from about 150 NorWeginn workers. who were placed at its disposal. and a con siderable number of whom belong to the crew that are now sailing with the ship in the Antarctic. The loading capacity of the ves }se1 is 25,100 tons on a draft of 35 'ft, 137;; inches. If the vessel, which betWeen the whaling seasons can be used as a tanker. had been built as an ordinary tankship, its loading capacity would have been about 27.500 tons d.w. The hull is practically all-welded and has been specially strengthened for navigation in ice—filled waters. A considerable part of the welding. especially on the decks. has been performed by automatic welding Oasis Service Station Lubrication - Washing 116 South Mission across from post office Phone 12 WENATCHEE YI'LETIDE GREETINGS Deaconess Hospiial CHESTER FINKBEINER Okanogan & Kittitas Ph. 1746 Wenatchee SEASON‘S BEST FROM WENATCHEE, WASH. The ship is provided with corrugated longitudinal and transversal bulk heads of the Gotaverken's special design. She has the usual char acteristics of a whaling factory, although the lines are considerably more modern and streamlined than Ithose of previous vessels of this kind. The captain's bridge and the ideckhouse. which are built of light metal, are located Well forward. ~and the Diesel machinery is plac ed aft. with the funnels one on .each side of the whale slipway. lAbove this the aft boat-deck is al :50 situated. In this way, a very ilarge unobstructed flensing deck ‘has been obtained midships where ithe whale carcasses arc- dissected 1after having been hauled through lthe slipway in the stern by means 10f heavy winches placed on a spe- Jcial superstructure in the middle inf the deck. Modern electric ma .‘chinery is used for the cutting up :of the whales. I The factory on the 'tweendeek !measures 341 ft. by 8 ft by 16 ft. ii" height —« which would be a ra 1ther big factory even on shore. At ifull capacity with the staff work ‘ing in shifts day and night, it pro iduces about 450 tons of oil a day gand gives full employment to some ;150 workers. The machinery. boil ‘ers, etc.. of the factory are of the imost up-to-date construction and ‘offer several interesting novelties. {which make possible the extrac tion of more oil than before. Be jlow the factory are 60 oil-storage ltanks with a capacity of 1.125.000 {cu ft. In addition there are some 30 tanks for bunker oil. fresh wa ;tcr, etc. In addition to the whale éoi]. the factory produces vitamins 1and other medical preparations. 'EOne or more chemists are accom- Q-panying the expeditions, and they ihave a special laboratory at their disposal. The ship will be served ‘by ten whale boats which are laid ‘up in Walfish Bay between the |seasons. ‘ The various categories on board have different quarters and mess— ;es, all spacious and practically and fcomfortably equipped. The larg iest messroom is that for the fac itory workers. situated forward. iwhich has seating accorfimodation lfor 142 persons, and which is also {intended to be used as a. cinema fand entertainment hall. In the deckhouse below the bridge are situated the officers’ quarters and messes as well as an 1owner's suite. which are all taste fully designed and decorated. The hospital includes operation room, X-ray plant, etc. There is also a shop where the crewcan buy var ious things. The kitchen is on a -very large scale. The food is ‘transported by lifts to the various icooks' galleys. Provisions for iabout six months can be carried :in the stores. which include re lfrigerated space for meat. fish and ivegetables. Live pigs will also be :kept on board. | The “Kosmos III," naturally. has I ian extensive engine room. Elec-i itric powar is used to a greater ex- ‘ itent than on previous ships of this 1kind. The power is supplied by 5 iGotaverken Diesel engines direct jly coupled to 240 kw ASEA gen ‘orators with a combined effect of { H.200 kw. The steam required for i ithe oil extraction is supplied from i ‘a steam plant consisting of 6 boil- 1 iers with a total heating surface of i 10,300 sq. ft. ; I “Kosmos III" is Diesel-engined} iwhich is rather unusual for whal iing factories. The engine consists 1 'of a Gotuverken 9-cylinder single- ‘ acting, two-stroke cross-head en-i gine with a cylinder diameter of? 680 mm and a stroke of 1.500 mm. i It develops 3.300 HP at 112 r.p.m.. i giving the ship a speed of 13-5i knots fully loaded. During the Melivery trials 9, speed of 141g, 3 ‘knots was reached. The tWO nux- 1 iliary engines. each of 200 HP,i are also of the yard's own design. } “Kosmos III" is the next biggest i vwhaiing factory at present in ex- j istence. She has been designed by i the Gotaverken in collaboration‘ with the Norwegian whaling tac tory experts Arnesen.
