:Europe there are thousands. Rumc !
:symbols are a cultural product of
jthe early Scandinavians. and for
3a thousand years were practically |
'their only means of expressing‘
themselves in writing. The earliest '
runic alphabet contained twentyfi
four characters. but later was.
shortened to sixteen. Usually aj
new technology is more simple in ‘_
its primitive beginning. and in-‘
creases in detail of classification
with its advancement. But here
we see the reverse. in that the
more complex alphabet precedes
the more simple. The explanation
is probably that the early alpha
bet of twenty-four characters was .
borrowed ready made. from a peo
ple of greath culture than the.
Goths. In their new habitat these‘
symbols were used infrequently.
and the result was that one-third
_of them were found unnecessary
and eventually forgotten.
More than eighty per cent of
the runic inscriptions in the Scan
dinavian North are written in the
alphabet of sixteen signs.-—From

was highly commended by the crit
ics for her artistic and musically ’

praise for his dramatic perform
ance and beautiful voice. The op- ‘

holm Opera offered another in-

01d singer Christine Lindberg
made her debut as Amner‘s in Ver—
‘di's “Aida." Christine Lindberg 1
is of Swedish descent but was
born in America and did not come
to Sweden until last summer.
Though her native language is ‘
English she sang the whole opera
in perfect Swedish. Th‘s debut
also proved a success and the crit- ‘
ics described it as sensational and
congratulated the Opera on this
, acquisition.
