contest in modern pentathlon ever
held outside the Olympic Games
took place in Stockholm at the end '
of October with 28 participants
from seven countries, It turned
out to be a hard fight with many ‘
surprises, one of the chief of which .
was the Hungarian Captain L.<‘

ipreviously rather unknown, hot

Gide Gets Nobel
Literary Award

today was awarded the 1947 Nobel i
‘Prize for Literature. The choice?
was widely applauded in Swedishi
literary circles. Mr. Gide. the ‘I

award, was honored by the Swed- I
ish Academy "for his extensive
and artistically important author
ship. in which he has exposed the
problems and conditions of human
kind with fearless love of truth
and psychological perception." !
Sir Edward Appleton, a pioneer '
in radar. received this year's No- i
be] Prize in Physics. He was cited i
for “his contributions in exploring ‘
ionosphere, i. e.' electrically con-1
ductive strata. in the upper atmos- l
phere of the earth." He is Secre
tary of the Department of Scien
tific and Industrial Research,
London. I
The 1947 Nozel Prize in Chemis- I
try went to Sir Robert Robinson. ‘
an organic chemist for "his re
search regarding biological signifi
cant substances from the vegetable
kingdom, especially alkaloids." He
is Professor at Oxford University.
