Gide Gets Nobel
Literary Award
‘ STOCKHOLM~-(By wireless Dr-— i
’Andre Gide. regarded as the fore- i
lmost contemporary French author. 1
today was awarded the 1947 Nobel i

eighth French writer to win thisi
award, was honored by the Swed- I
ish Academy "for his extensive
and artistically important author
ship. in which he has exposed the
problems and conditions of human
kind with fearless love of truth
and psychological perception." !
Sir Edward Appleton, a pioneer '
in radar. received this year's No- i

for “his contributions in exploring ‘

SWedish Press Halls Award
To Andre Gide
“Although the Swedish Academy {
has not forsaken its habit of pref
erably giving the literary prize to
already greying and honored au
thors." writes Ivan Pauli in Morg- '
on-Tidningen. ”M Gide is well I
worth the award, because of hisI
literary skill and the honest, un-‘
dogmatic idealism that character
izes his production—which is not
lalways easy to understand.” Sten
Selander, noted poet and essayist, g
‘states in Svcnska Dagblndct that 1
this year's choice shows "a free-i
idarn from narrow prejudices andL
lproves that the Academy has been !
inble to look behind the surface;
'and reach the essential. Right or}
wrong. this is a characteristic not ?
always associated with academics." E
