THE SCANDINAVIAN AMERICAN Russian Football Vic'l'ory in Sweden STOCKHOLM — The Russian football team “Dynamo” recently visited Sweden and played two matches against two_ of Sweden’s best club teams, Norrkoplngskam raterna and Goteborgskamraterna. Both matches, for which allutick ets were sold out far in advance were won by the Russians by 5-1. “Dynamo” showing a very swift and effective play. The first match took place in the Stockholm Foot ball Stadium ln the presence of the Swedish Crown Prince and a pub lic of 39,000 persons, and the sec ond one in Gothenburg. much sleep when the battle for existence is on. In one year. 78 million pounds of fish was caught and auctioned off at the Skag— another year the catch sank to 34 million pounds. The fish is like pure gold and this gold is distrib uated according to the age of the fisherman; he in turn converts it into passing pleasures such as drinks or women, while others in vest in homes, ships or automo biles. ' There is considerable difference between Anchers grey bearded to bacco chewing fishermen and the clean shaven gentlemen chauffeurs of today. “ One of the old paintings car ried the title. “Will he turn the point?" Today that has but to do with the driving test for securing a motor license. And it is now also fishing population that inhabits the ballrooms where the aristo cratic champagne coolers have been replaced by the more demo cratic beer bottle. On the floor. a shirt-sleeved and tie-less youth ful manhood leads the powdered iipsticked pinup girls over the waves. Hundred years after the birth of Holger Drachmann. his grave is devoid of flowers and bordered with a wire fence. The lyre in the cement is cracked. In a remote corner of the town's book store. it is possible to find a stack of Drachmann'a poems- at reduced prices—rand in one of those books someone has written: The day so quickly passes and eventlde comes on, Once here was another Skag perhaps a better one? A ‘ ""-:.'jl.:.;il'.::§?h ‘ Pmidonf ing Organizafions Sweden Pulls In Its Bell l } STOCKHOLM— (By airmail) —This year the Swedish [people will have to forego the traditional rice porridge at Christmas, says the chairman of the Food Commission in a report on the Swedish supply situation. Other Yuletide dishes are expected to be available, although not in such quantities as in former years. The Commission’s chief worry just now is how to be able to give the farmers enough feed for their cows and pigs. The domestic fod der crop turned out very poorly, in addition to which maize, oil cakes, and fodder cakes are internation ally rationed. Furthermore, Ar gentina has recently issued a tem porary ban on the export of bran. which is not included in the world rationing plan. l_ Afte r the adjustments nowi made in the Swedish food rations. 1 those for bread are down to 5.04; 02., while butter is 1.26 02., and sugar 1.81 oz. per day and person. i ‘In regard to bread, Sweden has‘ ‘the lowest ration in the world. while the allowances of butter and gaugar are about the average of those in other countries. In fact. the Food Commission chairman points out, the Swedish rations have now reached a point where‘ they cannot be further reduced‘ without detriment to the country’s 1 health, : ' The only bright spot this year is the potato crop, which is suf ficient to cover the domestic con sumption as well as provide for the manufacture of potato flour. On [the other hand, there will be no] Ipotatoes available for the making ‘ lot distilled spirits. Finally, as re : gards beer. the breweries have had * ’ their quota of barley cut from 22,- jOOO tons last year to 10,000 tons gin 1947. They will. however, be table to ek'e this out by purchasing Lraw sugar and by importing malt :fmm Denmark. 1 [Motor Traffic Severely Restricted Ban on Pleasure Driving 1 I On November 4 the Government 1 issued restrictions on motoring for i the purpose of saving gasoline, oil. !tires, and other accessories. As Lhad been expected. Sunday driving ' {will be hardest hit. From Novem iber 8. trucks. pleasure cars, and {motorcycles are forbidden to use i ‘the roads on Sundays and public lholidays without special permitsl i'I'his ban does not affect doctorsl |and others who can claim emer igency reasons. At the same time. ‘ :niotor racing is forbidden, as well i :as air displays and sight-seeing' . flights. In addition. all driving 1 {permits will be checked. so thatl ' further e c o n om y steps can be “ taken, should they prove ncces— 1‘ sary. 1 The Gowrnment's decree has a roused mixed feelings writes the Conservative Sn-nska Dagbladet of Stockholm. adding that in the mntor organizzltiuns, the gas and Oil trade. and the automobile in dustry it is '.rzenerzilly felt that the authorities should first have tried to see what emllll he :u-l-umplisi‘ed liy voluntary saving. The L i h e r :1l Dagens Nyheter points nut that the luau “'UI'SL alternatives \rere avoided the. ra— i [inning of gum-line and the limit— ing; of the driving radius. The‘ paper believes that. psyehelogieal» l)‘. the (‘.overnment measure will find suppnrt dim tn the deplorable number of (mine accidents that occur on Saturday nights and Sun~ days. Less Paper for Swedish News? - papers and Magazine-a “ i The consumption 0f paper by 'Swedish newspapers and mngaZi- ‘ mos will soon be further reduced: ENew restrictions have become ne- ! icessary because of the camper-i atlvely low production of electric { power, a consequence of the pro- I longed drought last summer and Hall, and the country's shortage of so-cslled herd currencies. which will have to be met by lncreued exports of forest industry products. ' The restrictions must be made, in such a way that the freedom! of the press, whlch ls lndlspensw able 111 a demorratlc country, will 5 not be endangered. the committee i appointed to prepare the measures ! any: in its report to the Govern- 3‘ lment. The committee recommends 1 thnt tor 1948 a huge quantity. corresponding to 50 per cent of the 1946 consumption. be allotted to all newspapers and magazines. This quantity the publications should be entitled to use without further investigation into their needs. They should then be di vided into five different groups, of which the first one. consisting of magazines for lighter entertain ment, would receive only the basic quantity. Group No. 2 would get 14 per cent more, and the other categories somewhat more. News papers are placed in group Not 5. The Swedish Newspaper Publish ers Association, the c o m m i t t e 9 says. should continue in charge of this part of the rationing sys tem. basing its calculations on a total quantity of 102,000 tons oi newsprint for 1948.
