THE SCANDINAVIAN AMERICAN Funds Donated For Microscope OSLO—Bacteriological research in Norway will soon take a long step forward with the purchase of that country’s first electron micro scope. it was announced in Oslo recently. A 125,000 kr. 1325.000) grant for the new instrument was recently presented to the W. Wil helmsen Bacteriological Institute by Erling H. Samuelson. head of an Oslo shipping firm. Heretofore, virus research in Norway has been severely ham pered by the lack of this vital and expensive microscope. It is under stood that earlier contacts with the instrument's manufacturer in the United States may result in its early delivery to the Oslo Insti tute. The value of new life insurance written in Sweden in 1947 set a new record high of about 1,005 million kronor, which is 244 mil lion kronor more than the year before. Thirty six of these (includ ing four small motor tankers and five whale catchers) with a com— bined tonnage of 42,500 tons were built in Norway during the year, Deliveries from abroad totalled 42 new-built vessels of 178,000 tons. Ships purchased abroad during the same period included 180 ships at 579,000 tons including 12 steam and 8 motor tankers. Ship losses during the 12 month period totalled 23 vessels (40,000 tons) of which 4 were blown up by mines. Seventy-six ships were sold abroad during the year. Net 1947 additions to the fleet there fore totalled 161 vessels with a to tal tonnage of 621.000 gross tons, of which there were 16 tankers totalling 143.000 tons. At year's end there were 1.474 Norwegian vessels (over 100 gross tons) totalling 3.936.000 gross tons. Ships building and on order for Norwegian accounts totalled 1.920.000 gross tons on that date -~1,625.000 tons of which were building abroad. First War Babies Return To Norway OSLOmWThQ Oslo press notes that a first group of 60—70 “war children" are scheduled t( nrriw in Norway's capital from the Rus— sian zone in Germany within tho‘ month. These are the first of sev eral hundred children who were born in Norway during the occu pation and then forcibly shipped‘ off to various parts of Germany by the Nazi authorities. . With Nazi fathers and Norwe gian mothers, their uncertain fu—f ture as waifs in Germany soon re sulted in government action to bring them home and give them a‘ fair chance. The first to arrive will be those who have no homes. and who have simply been passed! on from one German institution; to another. Travel to Norway will _ be by bus. Following arrival each‘ child will be given a thorough clin— l ical examination before being re-{ turned to the mother or charged[ to the adopting parent. . 1‘ Most members of this first group i will be returned to their own fam— ‘ilies as their identification papers accompanied them to Germany. Others still in Germany are not so fortunate. however. and in many instances identification is all but impossible. This com pares with 3.7 million a year ago. Sweden‘ with 67 ships building #4 of which are steamers and the rest motor driven -— comes third after Great Britain and France.
