health of all. Sewage treatment
plants must be built or our beach

and yachting destroyed.
. “Not only are the city’s salt
water beaches unfit for swimming
b‘because of the astounding extent
of pollution." Pomeroy declared.
."but the present administration's
shortsighted and costly practice of
doing nothing about the problem is
resulting in a rapid deletion of the
oxygen supply from marine-life
habitats. This results in our fish
‘supply migrating to purer waters.
while those that remain are of
inferior. quality—and often unfit
for human consumption." Pomeroy
said.

do not think the crisis will have
any effect on the summer Games
in London," he said.
The IOC struck boldly to pre
vent future disputes. It made a
draft rewrite of the Olympic reg
ulations. which Edstrom acknowl
edged were "contradictory." After
final polishing. they will be pub
lished. probably next summer. “I
think the Games have been a won
derful success." he said.
Competition was intense. Only
121;. points separated Sweden
from fourth place Norway in the
Associated Press team tables
based on 10-5-4-3-2-1 points for
the first six places.
Norway. whose husky sons boy
cotted all sport during the Ger
man occupation and have not re
gained true form, made the poor
est showing it has ever had in the
Winter Games. It was first every
time except for the depression
Games at Lake Placid. N. Y.. in
1932. Then Norway was second to
the United States.
The Americans won three firsts
this time. One was in its old spe
cialty -— the four-man bobsled
event——whlch went to the daring
team piloted by Frank Tyler of
Lake Placid. N. Y.
The other two were "first-time"

winning three previous times.

helped the gate.
Beaming over receipts. Albert
Mayer. secretary of the Swiss Or
ganizing Committee. said: "We
had 50 per cent more spectators
than expected. It was very satis
factory."
The Russians came—11 strong
-——to observe. but they did not ask
the IOC to recognize a Soviet
Olympic Committee. This fox-mai
ity is necessary to qualify them
for the Summer Games.
The path still is open, however
The IOC has voted to recognize a
Russian committee upon notifica
tion that one has been formed.
Thus they could wait even until
July 29——opening day of the Lon
don Games—to make a move.
