Patronize Our Advertisers Govemor Mon C. Wallgren's labor 06!. Statement: .. Labor Day of 1518 finds the American working man once more in a period of >challenge. By now he should be accustomed to it, since never in the history of the nation has a gain by labor been achieved without battle or re tained without challenge. This is no time for empty mouthings about honoring Labor on its own holiday. The challenge to Labor is too serious. and the issues too great, to permit evasion. My mesage to the working people of the State of Washing ton is this: 1. 1 am against the Taft-Hartley Law. It should be repealed ‘l I beiieve firmly in the right of working people to a decent living}. at wages sufficient to enable them to own their homes. to fx‘l‘fe for emergencies. to educate their children. to be same in their jobs: and to set aside funds for their old age. There is no possible compromise on this program for working men and women. Either you're for it—or against it- And, your actions tell which you are. ‘ The Democrats enacted the Wagner Act—Labor's “Bill of Rights." The Republicans ripped it to pieces by pass ing the Taft-Hartley Law. and now are threatening to go even further. .\'o clearer picture can be drawn of the intents and pur poses of the two major parties toward Labor. The com parison speaks for itself. The same applies to prices. housing. education and health services—to all the elements which go to make up a de cent lin'ng and security for millions of American workers. To Labor's demands for action, the Republicans' reply has been a slap in the face. The elections this Fall are bargaining-representation elections for all the American people. It is the voter’s chance to choose betweeh the company representatives and men with good labor record. But the important thing is to REGISTER and VOTE. This is a battle for survival. and those who stay home from the polls are simply asking to be deprived of their hard-won freedom to organize, to bargain collectively and to seek better and higher standards of living.
