CBS Commentator Returns To IISA Sweden Surgeons Use “Atomic Energy” To Diagnose Heart Diseases STOCKHOLM, July 5—(By air mail )—A new heart clinic, employ ing the latest methods and equip ment, has been opened at the 86- dersjukuset Hospital in Stock holm. Among the methods em ployed at the Cardiac Clinic is the catheter method. whereby a cath eter of plastics is inserted in the veins of the arm and then grad ually. following this arterial pas sage, is made to penetrate right into, or through._ the patient's heart. The position of the catheter is determined by means of X-Ray photographs, and analyses of the blood are made regularly during the progress of the catheter. “Atomic energy" is also used for examinations. The method. or iginally developed by the Nobel Prize winner, Professor George von Havesy, employs radioactive phosphates. which are introduced into the blood stream and serve to “brand" the red blood corpuscles hr the purpose of determining the quantity of blood and its speed of circulation. The metabolism of oxygen in the muscles of men and animals is a third problem which has been studied Hy specialists at the Car diac Clinic. They have found that the ability of certain mammals, such as seals. to stay under water for lengthy periods is due to the special nature of the myoglobine. the substance that gives the muscle its red'color. Y.—-Fifty skilled Norwegian workmen are beginning a 5-year task of break ing up the German battleship “Tir pitz" now lying belly-up on the shore of a north-yorwegianfjord near 'I‘romso. Once the pride of Hitler's navy, the “Tirpitz” met its end in October, 1944 under ‘a. deluge of 72 six-ton bombs. Mas sive craters on the nearby island of Hak remain as grim reminders of the raid and now serve as water reservoirs for the islanders. Even in death. the "Tirpitz" represents a valuable piece of property. Over 20,000 tons of iron and steel are expected to be salvaged. as well as over 100 electric motors which have never been touched by water. Many large auxiliar engines are undamaged. as less than a third of the vessel is under water. Water damage in sunken sections has been reduced, thanks to quantities of oil floating within the vessel ‘which greases the equipment twice idaily—with each tide. One 460 iH.P. diesel engine has already been salvaged and installed in a fish fillet factory near Melbo. But the work is dangerous. Stored in the ship are believed to be thousands of tons of ammuni tion and large stocks of gasoline and oil. The rist of fire and ex plosion is very great. Also locked in the lightless flOOded compart ments are the bodies of 1200 Ger man Marines which must be re moved and buried. iNew Negotiations lOn Sale of Aluminum OSLO—Negotiations have been opened for further sales of alum inum to the Soviet Union. A first contract of one thousand long tons has been filled already. The demand for aluminum is still heavy. according to Mr. Owe, Director of Aardal Veg-R.
