How much courage was :disclosed by his continued negotia =tions with fanatic fighters and his fearless journeying in trigger-hap py areas. How much devotion is nmv counted in the last full meas- ure exacted by the shooting at q Jerusalem. Men "in the uniform of the Jew iish Army" are reported respon jsible for the killing of Count Ber !nadotte and an other UN official. :Without more inormation it must :be assumed that the shooting was an accident or that the men were §Stern Gang members in disguise. In is reported that the Stern Gang {had threatened the Count. In any lease. the Zionist cause will suffer {unless the Israeli Government takes effective measures to pre went any further attacks on UN officials. : Count Bernadette gave to peace i'making the energy other men gave to warmaking. Nephew of the :King of Sweden. after a somewhat §frivolous youth he turned to pub ilic service, becoming active in Boy iScout work and head of the Swed- Iish equivalent of the USO. As an officer of the International Red 1Cross he made dangerous journeys during the war into bomb-splashed lGermany to handle the exchange lof prisoners. That work led to his grcle as the negotiator of peace ‘with the Germans. A ’ Count Bernadette is only the {most distinguished of several UN lofficials who have given their lives ‘ir. the effort to make peace in Pal iestine. Maude Boyden once pro posed a “peace army" of vo-Iun ‘lters to go and stand physically be tween the line of warring nations. The UN mediators have made that kind of sacrifice. (By wirelesle-In honor of the mem ory of Count Folke Bernadotte. the Swedish European Aid organ ization has issued an appeal for the collection of an international fund which will be used to serve the interests of peace and human ity. for which Count Bernadette worked and fell. The manifesto reads: “It is our firm conviction that Swedish men and women. private and official. as well as groups and organiza— fions. fired by Folke Bernadotte‘s life work. will be happy to con tribute to this fund. thereby show ing the world that our people has taken an intimate part in the work for international peace which he. in the name of the United Nations. was appointed to exedute and for which he sacrificed his life. "We are also convinced that peo ple in many countries will long re member Folke Bernadotte's work in connection with the liberation of the victims of the concentra tion camps, and his contribution to humanity and peace. Which form a contribution from other coun tries will take is still to be inves tigated." In collaboration with the Swed- humanity would do well to honor them highly. It can do so most effectively by giving more active support to UN and to all genuine peacemaking by combating in it self the ignorant prejudices and selfish fears which pervert patriot ism. Puget Power’s total taxes amounted to about 2‘6 mulls per kilowatt-hour sold tor the year 1947. Under Bonneville‘s $l750 per kilowatt-year rote, the unit cost per kilowatt-hour at on 80% load factor is 2.5 mills and the cost decreases to 2 mills at 100% load factor. It's something to think ab0ut when the taxes Puget Power pays to various branches of government exceed the pr-ce at which government power is sold. PUG‘T ‘OUND POWER 5 LIGHT CO.
