According to a nation wide inquiry made on September 1. the harvest of cereals will be eighty-one per cent greater than that of last year. The yield of rye may even turn out to be twice that of 1947. while the wheat crop is expected to be sixty-eight per cent bigger. The hay crop. on which depends the country‘s supply of milk. cream. cheese. butter. and meat. will be some twenty per cent greater than last year. It is esti‘ mated that this year’s grain har vest will show an increase of elev en per cent as compared with the average crop for the period 1937- 1947. On the whole it seems that the harvesting has progressed well. despite adverse weather con ditions. Should the final statistics bear out the very hopeful preliminary figures. Sweden may be able to abolish bread rationing this fall. This has been forecast as a possi bility by Gunnar String. Minister of Supply.
