Norwegians Find
New Wonder Food
OSLO.—Climaxing years of re
search, Norwegian scientists le
cently announced a new emerg—
ency food, said to be far super
ior to similar products in use at
the present time. The new liquid
food concentrate. known as KC
12. meets many of the Short-corn
ings of earlier emergency foods
—short-comings which were of
ten emphasized by the plight of
Norwegian merchant seamen sur
vivors of Nazi U-boat attacks.
Chief advantage of the new
food it its liquid form, which
makes addititnal water supplies
unnecessary :ii an emergency. In
recent tests. soldier \‘C'Iunteers
have gone through 14 days of
normal training with KG-12 as
thexr only source of nourishment.
In early September. however. a
final test brcught4human guinea
pigs out into the middle of the
Oslo Fjord where they spent five
days aboard two rubber life rafts.
One team of two men was given
KG~12. while the other tw0 were
given an equal \‘clume of what
until now has been considered the
best of the foreign-produced
emergency foods. At the end of
three days. the latter had only
a {e x food tablets and very little
water left. while the [(6-12 group
still had supplies for many days.
and showed no signs of fatigue.
Norwegian physicians and Air
Force specialists who have devel
oped the new food have revealed
that its ingredients include amino
acid. The product is to be pat
ented. according to report. and
may be produced in exportable
quantities.

Swedish Harvest
Prospects Favorable
STOCKHOLM, Sept. 18.—lBy
airmailb —— The Swedish harvest
prospects for this year are very
favorable. According to a nation
wide inquiry made on September
1. the harvest of cereals will be
eighty-one per cent greater than
that of last year. The yield of rye
may even turn out to be twice that
of 1947. while the wheat crop is
expected to be sixty-eight per cent
bigger. The hay crop. on which
depends the country‘s supply of
milk. cream. cheese. butter. and
meat. will be some twenty per cent
greater than last year. It is esti‘
mated that this year’s grain har
vest will show an increase of elev
en per cent as compared with the
average crop for the period 1937-
1947. On the whole it seems that
the harvesting has progressed
well. despite adverse weather con
ditions.
Should the final statistics bear
out the very hopeful preliminary
figures. Sweden may be able to
abolish bread rationing this fall.
This has been forecast as a possi
bility by Gunnar String. Minister
of Supply. HOWever, it will also
depend upon the outcome of cur
rent trade negotiations with Ar
gentina.

Bomb Startles Town
OSLQ. — Workmen excavating
foundations for the new Vallo Oil
Refinery near Tonsberg, Norway,
recently were startled when they
struck what appeared to be the
nose of a huge unexploded bomb.
Closer investigation showed
that their fears were well-founded
and after several days of careful
probing, naval demolition exports
uncovered a 1000 lb. bomb. It had
rested undisturbed in an under
ground clay «bank since an Al
lied attack on the refinery in
April of 1945.
