September Riksdag Elections Brought Out Record Vote STOCKHOLM, September 30.“; (Air mailed)~fi'Ihe voter turnout; in the elections on September 19| for members of the Riksdag's Sec- E and Chamber topped all previous records in Sweden. More than 82 I per ce’nt of the 4,700,000 eligible} voters went to the polls, while 71‘ per cent has been the averagei during the last ten years. The highest record hitherto was set in; 1936 with 74.5 per cent. The in-‘l crease has been very gradual up? to this year, when a sudden up-‘ ward swing of ten per cent was registered. I The increase in the number of ballots cast is a result of a rising political interest in the middle and working classes. Official election statistics prove that these two categories, and especially the last mentioned — the industrial workers, the small tenant farm ers, and the agricultural laborers —in previous years voted on the average less than the more pros perous people, who form a much smaller group. Thus in the 1944 general elections, more than 85 per cent of the wealthy went to the polls. while the corresponding figure for the middle classes ~— farmers, businessmen, and the ma jority of white collar workers—— was 73.5 per cent and for the workers 68.7 per cent. Prelimi nary 1948 figures show- that while the turnout of the highest social groups was 85 per cent. the same as at the last elections, 82 per cent of the eligible voters of the two 1 o w e r categories participated. thu_s proving that the difference between the classes as to political interest is now virtually elimi nated. Of the more than 600,000 new voters this year, about 400,000 are estimated to belong to the work ing class. and some 200,000 to the middle class. while hardly 10.000 were of the highest income group. Some cemmentators make a point of the fact that, in spite of the" exceptionally high turnout of the workers. the percentage of the ballots cast for the socialist par ties, the Labor party and the Com munists. decreased three per cent. amounting now to some 52 per cent of the total. Spokesmen for the Liberal party, which made very substantial gains. estimate that one third of the party's sup port came from the workers.
