Dr. George A. Lundberg, head
of the University of 'Washington
Department of Sociology. has been
selected by the University of Min
nesota to receive that institution's
Outstanding Achievement Medal
for high eminence and distinction
in the field of sociology.
Dr. Lundberg received the medal
this week in Minneapolis in a cere
mony marking the University of
Minnesota‘s centennial. Dr. Lund
berg, head of the university’s so
ciology department since 1945. re
ceived his doctor's degree at the
University of Minnesota in 1925.
Dr. Lundberg is born of Swedish
parents in this country and speaks
Swedish \fluently. He visited Swe
den about a year ago. where he
lectured and made a study of SW»,
den‘s social and economic reforms.

attle, last Sunday.
The star-packed team routed the
New Italian Cafe. 3-0. Western
Sports 1-0. Sunny Jim 4-0 and
Sunset Memorial from Vancouver
B. C. by a score of 3-1 in a “five
a team" tournament. It was the
first Seattle victory over a Cana
dian team in this type of soccer.
The Scandinavians thus can
boast the most brilliant season in
Viking Club history. for Sunday‘s
events but climaxed a series of
championship contests in whicn
the Vikings emerged victorious in
every single one. including the
Washington and Pacific Northwest
championships.
The season is over now and the
boys will get some needed rest
from play.
Attempts to secure the appear
ance of Stockholm's famous AIK
team seemed to have failed. ac
cording to word received here. The
Swedish team would have appear—
ed here in June in a game against
Seattle all stars provided the cost
of bringing them here had not
been so prohibitive.

Top Swedish Film Booked In Seattle

The magnificent Swedish film,
”The Road to Hgivga‘nf: will have
three open-to-the-public perform
ances. its first in- Seattlagr‘at’l‘h ”1'
and 9 o’clock next Monday, April
23, in the auditorium of 'GuggonJ
heim Hall on the University of
Washington campus.
Sponsors of the film showing
said yesterday that it was arrang
ed in answer to several requests
from local Scandinavian-Ameri
cans. Among thefn was Matts
Djos, who saw the film in Sweden
last summer. The University's

Finnish Geologist
Makes A Startling
Claim In Seattle
Mountains are floating upon the
earth.
This is the concept that Prof.
Weikke A. Heiskanen, internation
ally-famous Finnish geologist has
been working with for 30 years
Professor Heiskanon is in Seattle
on special invitation from the
University of Washington.
”Of course, the movement of
mountains is not visibly percepti—
ble," he said. “The sea upon which
they float. the earth's crust. is
rigid. Therefore the rate of flow
is quite low. but nevertheless the
mountains are floating."

the diameter of the earth. Pro
fessor Heiskanen is director of the
Institute of Geodesy. Photogram

“Mountains are very much like
icebergs." he said. “They rise and
sink. and the greater part of
their mass is below the surface."
He said that the ratio of visible
mountain to the unseen part be
low the surface is one to five.
