('05 Dalt‘. nssislalnt. Founded by Niels Poulson. once a poor Danish immigrant. who later amassed a fortune. The Am erican - Scandinavian Foundation has gone a long way toward carry ing out his lofty ideals. It is the first and oldest institution in the United States to pro‘note the in terchange of students. Since 1910 the ASF has awarded scholarships and stipends to American young men and women for study in Scandinavia. For more than 30 years it has promoted the inter change of trainees. This year. alone. about 400 trainees from Scandinavia are learning while working over here. Assisted by sister organizations in Scandinavia. though not financi~ ally. the ASF has the right con nections with which to carry out its extensive programs. The Foun dation publishes the illustrated quarterly, The American-Scandi navian Review. with literary and authorative articles. and the Sensational llew Swedish lock Will Make lile Difficult For Burglars. An entirely new type of lock.‘ which is likely to make life diffi cult for burglars and bank rob bers. was demonstrated the other day at a meeting of the Inventors' Association in Stockholm. The sig nificant outer features of this lock~invented by a well-known S“'z‘dl5ll meteorological >eientist. With many fine instiuments and measuring methods to his credit“ ai‘e its leaf—thin key and narrow key hole. The key is provided with holes of varmus types and Sizes. resembling those of a modern punch card The variety of key combinations is practically innum erable or 4000000000000. This means that every man on earth could buy 2.000 lock: t-r- each of which there would exist only one functioning key. The entirely new principle of design is Claimed to make the lock unpickable and practically dynamite proof. The inventor, Mr. Fabian Nils son. active at the Research Insti~ tute of the Swedish Defence Forci’s. began working on his de- SIgn T-R years ago. His interest in locks dates back to an episode when he had Sumo: :muble opening a fine century-old luck at a farm in his native province Dalecarlia where he lives .1: the summer. And so. when one day at a club meet ing the rtY‘i'SlllPYil of the Inventors‘ Assnmatv'm. .\lr Albm .luhanssr~n. handed hm: a \‘lSlllf‘l: (ard of stainless steel. With the j‘ikin: re mark that he might make some thing of it. he dedded to carry on with some lock-irventinn ideas he had got in his head. The result eventually turned out to be a de g: that doesn't resemble any g so far seen in the field of locking technique. The new Nilsson lock. which is patented all over the world. is easily and smoothly opened by put ting the key ihto the key hole and taking it out again without any; turning or twisting. It is made of: oonvexly shaped. rumor-blade thinI m lteel. 0.15 mm thick. and. h- a length of M 60 mm. The; ”W'unohohhutnhuelyl monthly news bulletin. Scan. It also publishes books in English about Scandinavia. a total of 77 so far. including samples of the best literature of the North. Sus taining. sponsoring or life mem bers receive two books free a year. All members receive a free Review and Scan and any book at a 25“} discount. At the head quarters library 4.000 volumes by Scandinavian authors or about. Scandinavia. are available for members. students. and research workers. The ASF also houses a Music Center with more than 2.000 re cordings on disc and tape repre senting the best of Scandinavian classical and popular music. Scores are also available of the most prominent compositions. Under ‘ASF auspices the best of Scandi navian music was recently broad icast nationally for three consecu tive Sundays. The Danish National Orchestra is now touring the U.S. 'visible slit of corresponding shape.‘ with just a tiny guiding “self“ be low. which makes it easy to insert the key. When it enters the lock. 3 system of ingeniously placed and shaped pins corresponding to the holes in the key are moved. re leasing the bolts. The door is then opened with a movable handle or a wheel. Locking: takes place without the key. solely by turning the handle in the oppasite direction. . Mr. Nilsson told the press and technicians present that he had been in contact with both Swedish and foreign specialists. but none uf them had been able to pick the lock or to make a key With the right combination. He also stated that it had met \\'l[h considerable difficulty to de sign the precision tools necessary for the manufacture of the keys and for making the narrow slit in the hard thick steel material in the lock. These problems. however. had eventually been successfully solved. In the first place the new Nils son lock is intended for safes and. bank vaults. It is probable. how ever. that the desxgn will gradually be adapted for ordinary domestic int-ks. car locks. etc. ‘ Once these keys are in general use the experts seem to have no vi-iubt that the invention is of epoch-making importance —— an other problem of a more trival nature will have found its solu— tion, VIZ that of the bunches of keys that bulge and wear out one's pockets. “'ith the leaf-thin keys 0‘! the Nilsson look a batch of. for instance ten keys will not take up more space than an ordinary pock et knife. ‘ The experimental work and the. patenting have been financed byl the Swedish Cooperative Union, but nothing has so far been stated about the future exploitation of the ‘,invent.ion. l i i ““—‘— i Sonny In. S. cities, including Seattle. With the "principal income from interest on tinvested funds and from contribu ;tions. the ASF now needs more 'financial support to avoid curtail ling its activities drastically.
