He made his coop air tight and put curtains at the windows. At noon he draws the curtains making the hen house perfectly dark, so that the biddies go to roost, and at one o'clock he raises the curtains letting the light in. The hens think another day has dawned and proceed to lay an other egg. It is a dark mean trick, equal to the man wfco put greea spectacles on his horse and then fattened it on rye straw, The green spectacles made the poor horse think it was liay.-Ex. There is a great deul of sound philosophy the following: The home-grown, band-spanked, barefooted, hard-fisted country boy makes a much better fight in the battle of life than the pamper ed high-collared creased trousers youth of our cities whose clothes have always been duste 1 with a whiskbroooi instead of ash:ng e. Let the town man out of a job try a year on the farm plowing behind a mule will take the kink out of his topknot the frog out of his throat the gas off his stomach the weakness out of his legs, the corns off his toes and will give him an appetite, an honest living and a sight of heaven. The Klondike.dinner was tried the other day by a PhTadelphia young man, and its success has caused him to wonder, the Rec ord says, why, in this age of nov el entertainment, no one had thought of it before. The dining room was arranged with canoqies of rough canvas to give the ap pearence of a tent. The table was of rough hewn boards, and there was no covering. A tin plate was at each place, and the plates were flanked with knives, forks and spoons of the cheapest variety. -All the guests were in vited to come in Klondike cos tume. jThe men wore flannel shirts' "and the women were dressed as suited their individ ual tastes. The butler who served the dinner wore high boots, and slapped the food down in true miner spirit. Nothing but beer was served to drink, and as there were no glasses the to. dVink from the bottles was weird in theextrem?. All the guests a greed that ihe Klondike dinner is not destined to become popular in polite society. QE8. fi. FE*S|$ v. It will never take the place of brains, business ability or industry, but it will, inevita bly, help their possessor to real ize larger dividends upon them. Some men try advertising as the Indian tried feathers. He had heard that the white n:an got considerable comfort in sleeping on feathers, so tie took one, laid it on a board and slept on it all aight. In the morning he re marked, 'White man s:iy featli- heap soft white man fool!" Here is an item lrom the Granada Journal. It will be a good thiny if our farmers will paste it in their hats and read it occasionally: Don't kick the cow even if feed is high. H.re is an item that should interest those prone to compjain.
