trouble that resulted in his injuries,
his wife and stepson, a young man

rears old. assaulted him. and dur
ing the mix-up he was beaten over

taken to the Arlington hotel, where
Im- was kindly cared for. and is again
on the street, apparently rut much
the worse for his exciting experience.

A Pleasing Incident.
The band boys were treated lo a
very unique, as well as a very agree
abie. surprise at the Christmas exer
cise at the opera h-use Saturday even
ing. A very large, neat package was
taken from tlie heavily loaded tree,
and the master ni ceremonies called
off. "Linton Concert Band." The
package was handed to Prof. Smith,
but he, being of a very retiring dis
position. looked on the package with
much suspicion, arid in fact so wrought
up the feelings of several others of
the band boys who were near him
that they. too. hesitated about open
ing the mysteriou* package. How
ever. after the exercises were over,
the boys all congregated around the
piano and decided to learn the worst
They first took the rapper and found
a large pasteboard box. On opening
this they discovered another jx that
nicely titled Into the larger. This
was supposed to contain the priz but,
on being opened, there was still an
other bx. This process continued
until there liad bee/i something like
thirty-seven boxes taken out and there
remained still another about the size
of an Ayer's pill-box. Inside this was
a package wrapped very carefully in
several sheets of tine tissue paper, and
when opened the boys' hearts were
made glad by finding a check for $lu
pinned to the following letier:

acceptable to you. and with it I wi.sh
