At the primary election to be held on the luth of this month seven dele Kates are to be chosen to represent the county of Emmons at the state con vention to be held at Jamestown on the 12th of July. There are ten names on the ticket. It will thus be seen that three of thotie whose names are on the ticket will be defeated. Let us look into the matter, republican read ers. and see why it is that more names than delegates to be chosen are on the ticket. A few weeks u^o, it appearing evi dent that seven representative repub licans of tills county were not likely to be found wlio would go to the trouble of circulating seven individu al petitions—which would require at least sixty-four signatures to each, and then pay their own railway fare and other expenses to the state con vention at Jamestown—steps were ta ken by a number of republicans of the county to secure a delegation of well known republicans from different sec tions of the county. Now. the primary law allows the names of the entire delegation to be placed on one petition, thus render ing it necessary to obtain but slity four names for the entire Hit, instead of having to procure seven times that number of signatures were the peti tions circulated separately. Kepubli cans throughout the county whom it was thought would go, and wiio would be satisfactory to the republicans of Emmons, were either seen or cotn tnuuicated with by letter, and the fol lowing gentlemen consented to have their names placed upon tbe primary ballot as candidates for delegate: W. O. Irwin, of Linton. Dugald Campbell, of Klntyre (in the Braddock neighborhood.) John I. Uoop, of Hazelton. Peter Shier, of Gay ton. John McCrory, of Winona. Andrew Boschker, of Strasburg, and A. W. Sims, of Linton. A petition was circulated for tiiese names at the same time other peti tions were circulated, and the republi cans who signed the petition, and many others who were not seen until after the petition was tiled, expressed themselves as entirely satisfied with the gentlemen who«e names appear on the petition. The reader should pay particular at tention lo the fact that not one of the gentlemen whose names appear above was asked pledge himself as to his action at t-he stile convention, ll was satisfactory to the republicans «f this lunty that a delegation be sent who would represeut the best inter ests ot the county. If they thought that Gov. Sarles, Auditor Holmes, Agricultural Commissioner Gilbreath and .Superintendent of Public Instruc tion Stock well and their official con freres had made good and faith ful state officers, they would vote for their renomination. If they thought otherwise, they would vote against them. At any rate, as the members of the delegation will vote at the con vention by secret ballot, it goes with out saying that they can on eacli and every candidate for office exercise their individual preferences for can didates without fear or favor. Hut this delegation of representa tive republicans of Emmons county was not entirely satisfactory to Messrs. Patterson, Armstrong and Cleveringa, all well-known reformers with a big U. W'a have in Euimonaa few hon est, fair-dealing, conscientious gentle men whose political antecedents are not unknown to the old-timers of the county, but wiio may be strangers iu a political way to some of those who will this year vote in Emmons county for the tirst Lime. i-'ist and foremost of this simon- McCORMICK ILINTON MACHINERY pure aggregation is PctiT (i Knoks. Why, it they were so interested in turning down Gov. Why should such emi lient and pure "reformers" as Messrs. Braddock and Van ISe£k be Icti oil their ticket? is it possible thai they could find but three "republicans" of their high order of political puiityin the county? But the issue is plain. It the ie publican voters of this county belie\e that Mr. Patterson should Ije sent tiie Jamestown convention to knock' Gov. But the way the mem bership of the board of count/com missioners was juggled, a few nil lis ago, shows a different set of facts. The appointments were made ifuickly and Without giving the people in whose districts there were vacancies the slightest chance to make objec tions or suggestions.
