NORTH DAKOTA AROUND THE STATE. The roads in Billings county are re ported in bad condition. Many towns boast of having had a sane Fourth of July celebration. Benson and Pembina county fairs will be held the week following the state fair at Grand Fork*. Peter Larson, a residentof Bismarck away back in the 70's, died a few days ago at Helena, worth something like 8W,000,000. The Journal at Yelva had a roast for a man who threw a lighted giant cracker into a barber shop where the barber was shaving a man. Liberal-hearted LdMourites sent a purse of $131 to a former resident who had removed to Adams county and met with temporary misfortune. Only two dipping tanks will be oper ated in the northern part of Stutsman county this summer, tlte necessity for the use of the others having passed. Business men of Bismarck kave es tablished a market day, and the peo ple in the surrounding country are taking great interest in its develop ment. Near Crown Butte, Morton county, a farmer became angry with the hired man of a neighbor and chewed the hired man's lingers so that amputa tion was necessary. There were no bidders on the con struction of the proposed new school house at Ashley, and the Tribuue wants to know what is the matter with the Bismarck builders. At Minot the tent of an aggregation of dancing girls was wrecked by a windstorm in the midst of a perform ance, and the performers and tiie large audience of young men were left ex posed to the weather. There appears to be more damage done in the northwest by lightning this year than for many years past,. Is it because lightning has struck orten er, or because there are more people and things to hit?—Grand Forks Her ald. Notwithstanding the backward spring, North Dakota promises to give more returns from her crops than many of the middle states, as the total losses of most of the fruit in those states means a great deal to the peo ple. Good rains are reported in the south western part of tiie state. It appears that North Dakota lias no arid sec tion. Localities which have been re garded as dry have had lots of rain, and sections which have been wet are calling for water.—Grand Forks Her ald. Before adjourning their July meet ing the county commissioners of Bur leigh county decided to build two ad ditions to the court-house—one on the east and one on the west side—to be used on the tirst tloor as additional of fice rooms for county officers and to en able the small rooms now used by some of the officials to be enlarged. Tiie second story will be devoted to judge's chambers and jury rooms, both being very badly needed. It has been learned by attorneys in Adams county that settlers who have filed on government land there since February, 1895, can prove up by paying 50 cents per acre instead of $1.25. State's Attorney Norton has discov ered that the government land in Adams county came within the great Sioux reservation proclamation of February 10,1890. Acting Land Com missioner Fred Dennett advises At torney Norton in a letter dated June 12th of the above facts. At Eckelson a man went down in a well to make repairs, and he was par tially overcome by gas. A passing traveler, noting the excitement, on learning what the trouble was, dashed a couple of pails of water down the well, and, while the water wet the man at the bottom, it carried down with it enough oxygen to revive him until lie could get to the top. This is a plan which is said to work well where quick action is needed, a£ it generally is in cases of threatened asphyxiation. A Wheaton lady has a new cyclone story. It happened Thursday night of last week. The lady had some liens that wanted to "set," and to "break them up" had placed them under a tub at the corner of the barn. Next day, after the wind storm, the tub was found about a hundred yards away from where it should have been, and he hens were still under it. No explanation is given except that tiie wind picked up tiie whole outfit and carried them the distance and safely lodged them where found. Social item in the Napoleon Home stead: Mrs. Christina Pfeifer of this place was united in marriage with Jacob Werner, of Harvey, beforeCoun ty Judge Bryant at tiie court house. Clerk of Court Hardt acted as "best man" and Attorney O'Donnell acquit ted himself nobly in tiie role of maid of honor, attired in pearl gray serge over balbriggan, and carrying "bach elor buttons." The judge used his ritualistic short form of ceremony, not having iiis long-tailed coat at hand. This was this same bride's third ap pearance before the same magistrate COUNTY LINTON, NORTH DAKOTA, THURSDAY, .Il LY 25. 1907 within the past five years, each time upon the same mission, and this time she applied for a cut rate on ceremony fees. The land department of the govern ment has stated that a teacher who has tiled on a land claim is liable to disappointment if she attempts to se cure title by living on the land only during vacation time, and especially if she attempts to commute. The policy of the government is to rigidly h.ild persons of every occupation to the same conditions in securing title to government land. The potato crop in a good many fields is being attacked by an unusual number of potato bugs this spring and liberal doses of Paris green, said to be the best remedy for the protection of the vines from tills insect pest, are used in many cases. Some of lie po tato patches, however, show few or no bugs on the vines, while in others the vines are badly eaten. »ne owner of a thrifty potato patch near the city stated that while his vims looked thrifty and healthy, and there were no pests on them, there arc few or no potatoes in the hills. It is possible that the potato crop may be a short one this fall.—Forum. MARIE MUSINGS. CorrespomlriKVof the UivoiM. I.luiy 24. The well-drillers are putting down a well for George Grogan. Frank Sweet has finished drilling a well for Larvick, Foell and Messncr at Brofy, on the line. Water was si nick at 105 feet. Everybody is invited to come and take a drink -of water. David Colijuhoun. Ed Larvick and J. W. Chapman went to the Capital City the other day and showed L'ncle Sam that they had played the win ning hand for a quarter-section of land each in Emmons county. E. L. Hawcs iiad a close call for his life the night of the big storm. Light ning struck a telephone pole two miles north of Linton just as he was passing. The stroke shocked his horses, knock ing one of tiiem to the ground. Mr. Ilawes was also stunned. The next tiling lie did was to drive into the creek bed where the bridge had teen removed, out at the Cad Logue place. Owing to the heavy rain there was from five to eight feet of water run- 4* ning. He had been to town to send some telegrams announcing Mr. Mas tin's death and to await answers, and that had made him late. There was no danger signal at either side of where the bridge had been. When work of this kind is being done red lightsignals showing the danger ought to lie placed, as the county is liable to get into a damage suit if some one gets hurt or his rig or team smashed up by the failure to provide such warning. A. L. Gcil has rock ami sand hauled to his lot west of this office, which looks like there might lie a building going up in the near future. Jas. Lawry and Clias. Larvick and David Colquhoun, of Brofy, went to Bismarck yesterday to tell Uncle Sam their experiences in five years of res idence on homesteads. Another good washing rain covered this section Friday and Saturday, and was followed by another Monday even ing. Crops that were not promisini much two weeks ago are recuperating wonderfully. J.Todd, Wesley Baker Jr., E. B. Phillippi and Wm. Chamley were in from the Hartford country Friday evening with several big loads of wool from the Badger- Logan (lock. He had been to points south 011 a business errand, ".limmie" wished to be remembered to old-tiine Hazelton friends. The Braddock News says that C. A. Moorman has been engaged to teach the liraddock school the coming year. If tllis is true, we regret it, for, lie sides being a capable instructor, C. A. has many friends in Ha/.elton who re gret to sec him leave town. Willi his success hi the Ilazelton school tiie pist year in mind, we doubt if his place here will be readily filled. Our loss is liraddock's gain. Mr. and -Mrs. W. T. Best of Wishek, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Mikalson and Mcs dames Snyder and llealy of ilazelton were a party of campers who went to John Wilde's place on the river last Friday for a few days' outing. They were joined Saturday by Mr. and Mrs. II. W. Allen, of Braddock, and by Dr. Snyder of Ilazelton. The male mem bers of the party left camp Monday, but the ladies staid a couple of days longer.
