Olaf Steensland, a former resident of Campbell county, S. I)., was killed by lightning near the town of Seim, S. D., recently. Mr. Steensland was an uncle of Mrs. J. A. Stember, of Linton. The village authorities have had a new well drilled about half way be tween the Phoenix Lumber yard and the union depot. As usual in Linton, a plentiful supply of good water was obtained. Reuel Grain and Wallace Kyes will, as soon as a tent arrives that is over due, go on a camping trip to the west side of the river. They will visit some of the new towns along the Milwaukee extension. Those who wish to prove up before County Judge Carley, in October, should, in order to insure the notice getting the required publications in time, begin their proof by the middle of August. E. E. Martin left last Friday for a trip to his old home in northern Illi nois. He will visit Rockford and other points in the "Rock River Country." lie expects to be absent until about the first of August. Mr. Eberle, proprietor of the bowl ing alley, says that, if the ladies of the town wish it, he will make a special ladies' night, the same as was done by the proprietors of the alley that was burned a few years ago. (•errit Ilaak, a young feller who re cently settled at Hull, was in town Thursday of last week, lie catne up to take a ride in Rowerdink's devil wagon. This time, though, he didn't risk the pipe going out, but smoked a cigar. Among those who were in town from the southern part of the county this week, either as linal-proof claimants or witnesses, were Comrades Bales and McAllister, Hal Tracy, W. B. and Fred Andrus, Peter Knudsen, and Tone Sleaseng. Mr. and Mrs. M. Van Soestand their daughter Grace were up from the Hull neighborhood yesterday. Mr. Van Soest, who lias the reputation of being one of the most successful farm ers in the county, is much pleased with the greatly improved condition of the crops, brought about by the re cent rains. Pitcher Ellert, of Lakota, this state, came in Monday and went witli the base-ball boys to Pollock Tuesday. lie is relieving Flanagan in some of the games In the tournament this week. Another young ball-player, named Freer, came with him, and is holding down first base for the Lintons in the Pollock tournament. A new switchboard is being installed in the telephone exchange. Now, if the Dakota Central Telephone Com pany would give us a metallic circuit to Eureka and take out the iron wires, all would be well. As it is at present, one cannot talk over the line farther than Strasburg with any considerable degree of satisfaction. George II. Stouder, of Fort Wayne, Ind., is out on a visit to his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. G. II. McLain. The young man is a son of Jacob Stou der, who was one of the early settlers in "the Winchester country," but who is now in business at Fort Wayne. Mr. and Mrs. McLain and young Mr. Stou der were visitors in Linton Monday. Attorney Berndt, of Bismarck, was in Linton Monday evening and Tues day in a contest case brought by an Aberdeen man against R. Yolk, the claim involved being in the Winooa neighborhood. Mr. Armstrong ap peard for Yolk. The case was ci•in promised and Yolk retains the lami. The contest, as far as it went, was fore Judge Carley. Of the Lintoii-Kureka game of base ball, the Blade of tlie latter place says: "Eureka was defeated—done up brown. The Linton team played, good, steady ball, while it was simply a grand 'errorfest' as far as Eureka was concerned. Flanagan. Linton's pitcher, was an uusolvable puzzle to the Eureka hunch, while Odle was tine picking for the Linton batters." Phillip Schneider is looking over the Linton neighborhood, and will prob ably buy land here and settle some where in the county. He recently ar rived froui "The Krim" (Crimea), 00 —or, rather, in, for it is a peninsula— the Black Sea. Mr. Schneider says that the Germans who came here from southern Russia have much to lie thankful for this year. In the Cri mea, he says, there is the worst drought the country lias experienced within the memory of the oldest in habitant. There is no crop at all, and the short grass is parched and burned. Considerable live stock lias died for want of food, and everywhere is heard the bellowing »f the hungry cattle. Mr. Schneider bays that some rpQURTH OF JULY VIEWS NOW ON SALE of liis neighbors are hauling straw as far as fifteen miles in an effort to keep their stock alive. $"Mendelo\vitz and Wittmayer are agentsforthe Minneapolis and Buffalo Pitts Thrashing Machines. A full line of repairs always on hand. It seems that when the Linton and Hazelton teams—who took tents with them and arc camping out during the tournament reached Pollock they four.ci that pnUtliies cuuui not be pro cured there. So they 'phoned to Lin ton for a supply, which was sent down yesterday by some of the numer ous rigs that went to Pollock from Linton. It is reported that Flanagan said he wouldn't pitch another game until lie had a feed of spuds. A letter to the editor from Princi pal Wilde, of Evanston (III.) Academy, says: "Your readers may be interested in the fact that Miss Vivian Sims, of your town, has done such satisfactory work at Evanston Academy of North western University during the past term that she was given honors for high records. The school has high standards of work and is conservat ive in awarding honors. The more credit, therefore, is due this student." Potatoes are scarce in Linton. The crop was so large in these parts last vear, and the prices so low in conse quence, that in many instances not much care was given to harvesting and housing the crop, and a good many bushels were frozen. Hence the scarc ity at the present time. Farmers in various parts of the county report new potatoes ready fur the table. Although they are not done growing, it is prob able that, if some of them were dug now and brought to Linton, a belter price would be received than could be obtained were they allowed to ripen. W. B. Andrus, Sr., father of W. B., of the Dale neighborhood, will lie out on a visit to his Eintnons county rela tives in a few days. His home is in East Smithlleld, Pa., likewise the home of R. W. Child, a former stock man and county commissioner of Em mons. Mr. (Einmons County) An drus' mother arrived at her son's home about two weeks ago. When the gen tleman arrives there'll be three gener ations of W. B. Andrus under tiie same roof, those initials also belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Andrus' (of Emmous county) first born. Now, how would you write their names for purposes of identification? The elder gentleman is "Sr.," all right, and the little boy is "Jr.,'' of course. For the third person it would probably be correct to put it "Mdie," for "Middle." We wonder what the twins will think of having so many "W. B.'s" in the houseV V^'Mendelowit/. S3" Ab'iiiL the tirst of April last, Yinccnz Meier, a hard-working fanner residing about six miles sout hwest of Linton, lost live young horses es trayed or stolen—probibly tiie latter, lie has advertised them and made a careful and prolonged search for them. If any one knows anything abiut them, and wants to do a kindly act, and at the same time receive a reward lie should communicate with Mr. Meier, whose postoltlce address is Lin ton. The horses are a light-bay two year-old pony mare white face and white hind legs. A dark-gray yearling mare: white stripe in face. A black mare: white stripe in face. A black yearling stallion one front and one bind leg white. A black yearling stallion, with crippled hind legs. Road Grading. The board of county commissioners of Emmons county, N. D., will receive sealed bids at tl:e ofllce of the county auditor until o'clock p. m. on the sixth day of August, 11*07, for grading the road commencing at the south west corner of section 10, township Lto, rantte 77, running due west on section lines for two miles. Bids must state price for each cubic vard of dirt handled. Dated at Linton, N. D., July 8,1907. J. L». PITTS, County Auditor. ... .••••• .., and Wittmayer are agents for the I Separating De vice, the greatest invention ever made for separating the loose grain from the straw. Major Belden and Dr. James, the veterinarian, came up from Fort Vates Monday evening. With them was Miss Martha and Master Eugene Stanley, niece and nephew of the major, who were en route to their home in Steele. Tiie Stanley family will probably leave Steele before win ter. Mr. Stanley is still at the Hun ters Hot Springs, Montana. He has been afflicted with rheumatism for some time, and is not getting much better. Tiie physicians at tiie Hot Springs inform him that he must seek a warmer climate. Mr. Stanley and children will be greatly missed in Steele and Kidder county. They have a beautiful home, surrounded by large trees, which Mr. Stanley himself, planted yeats ago. They were among the early settlers, and Mr. Stanley stuck to the town when the patronage of a young attorney in this part of tiie world was not enough to make him a millionaire in a hurry, and it seems too bad—now that he has secured a good practice—that lie must forsake the town where he has lived so long and the people many of whom have been his neighbors for nearly a quar ter of a century and go to reside among strangers. That he may lind a ca tion where lie will be restored to per fect health is the earnest, wish not only of the people of Steele, but of the many throughout the Missouri Slope who know him.
