THE Hon. R. X. Stevens has been
appointed by Attorney General McCue
to hLs former office of assistant
attorney
general. In whatever position he is
placed, "Steve" makes good. It was
formerly the fashion for any newspa
per man who wanted tosiy something
editorially, and didn't have anything
to say, to roast Stevens. Tiie writer
sat with the gentleman in two legis
lative sessions, and we found that,
whatever might be the prejudice
against him at the beginning, pretty
nearly everybody liked "Steve" at the
close or the session. The last house of

passed a resolution, with only one
weak little democratic "No," recom
mending him to the attorney general
for his present position. The fact is
that tt. X. stevens wasoneof the ablest
members- probably tiie ablest member
—of either of the two sessions. As soon

trying to turn the state over to the
railroads, they became his personal
friends. Kind-hearted and obliging,
lie was always ready and willing to
help a new member in any way, and
his fund of information as to legisla
tion, past and present, was frequently
drawn upon by niemlnrs from all parts
of the state. Mr. Stevens tilled I he
bill when he was attorney general be
before, and he will do likewise here
after.

upon the estate of Peter Jochim, late of
the district of Strasburg, in the county of
Emmons and state of North Dakota, de
ceased, be granted to P. G. Rooks, and
that the said petition will be heard and
duly considered by this court on Friday,
the 27th day of September, A. D. 1907.

Whereas, John B. Crowell, of Linton,
county of Emmons and state of North
Dakota, mortgagor, did, on the 1st day
of May, 1907, make his certain chattel
mortgage to Mrs. Leora McVary, mort
gagee, dated the 1st day of May, 1907,
to secure the following indebtedness, to
wit: Four promissory notes, each dated
May 1st, 1907, for the amounts and due
as follows: One for $50.00, due July
1st, 1907 one for $50.00, due Sept. 1st,
1907 one for $50.00, due Nov. 1st, 1907,
and one for $69.42, due Jan. 1st, 1908,
with interest on each of said notes at 8
per cent per annum from date until paid,
and which mortgage was duly filed in
the office of the register of deeds of Em
mons county, state of North Dakota, on
the 1st day of May, 1907, at 9:30 o'clock
a. m. and
Whereas, default has been made in
the conditions contained in said mort
gage, as follows, to-wit: Failure to pay
said first note of $50.00 on the 1st day
of July, 1907, or at any other time prior
hereto and
Whereas, there is claimed to be due
on said mortgage at the date of this no
tice the sum of two hundred and twenty
four and 68-1 OOths dollars for principal
and interest, besides costs and statutory
attorney's fees.
Now, therefore, notice is hereby given
that, by virtue of said mortgage and by
order of Mrs. Leora McVary, the present
owner thereof, I will offer for sale at
public auction, to the highest bidder for
cash, agreeably to the statutes in such
case made and provided, at the front
