Oils usually wise young friend, Ed
itor Packard, of the alley City
Times-Kecurcl,
has. we grieve to re
late. made two bad breaks, recently.
First, he pointed the finger of scorn
at his venerable co-laborer in the
moral vineyaid of Harri'-s county. He
geritlv chided Comrade Vallandigham,
of the Patriot-, because of his receiv
ing a special-act pension, and inti
mated that "Val"' receives his in
creased Income because of support of
Senator Hansbrough. It occurs to US
lhaL any young "nevy" of the able and
eloquent copperhead, Clement
L.—
who refused to be misled by the dis
loyal teachings of thai noted uncle,
and who shouldered his musket to
help the ellort to prevent that uncle's
secessionist friends from destroying
the Union—is entitled in his old age
to the consideration of the govern
ment. In this county, at least, all
of the special-act Increases have been
obtained by Portor .1. McC'umber,
chairman of the pension committee of
the United Slates senate. Not a sin
gle one of the few old soldiers in this
county who have »ad their pensions
increased by congrt-a has been asked
as to his political leaning, and we are
sure that at least as long as Mr. Mc
Cumber is in the senate none will be.
The writer is not a pensioner, for the
reason that he suffered no injury other
than from the probes of southern mos
quitoes during his brief service of six
months in the Mississippi squadron.
Tills as to the general law. lie is not
pensionable under he act of 1890 for
the reason that—save in bygone days
an attack of katzenjammer in "the
cold, gray dawn of the morning after"—
be has not been disabled by sickness,
and more or less prompt payment by
liis subscribers have kept him from
the "dependent" class. Under the
recently-enacted McC'umber law, he is
three years too youthful to receive the
minimum of $12 per month allowed to
Union soldiers of the civil war. But,
although not a pensioner, the editor
of the Record believes that those who
enlist ed defend this government in
the civil war at $13 per month, while
citizen government mule-drivers re
ceived $45 per month, are entitled to
aid fiom the government when they
are handicapped by sickness or old
tiiie. And this is equally true of the
soldiers of any other war in which
this country lias been engaged. We
believe that, were a vote in this
counly required on the question of
the score of old soldiers of the county
obtaining or keeping pensions—gen
eral or special—nine-tenths of the
people woujd cast their ballots in the
alHnnative.
The other bad break by the Times
Record Is the suggestion of Represent
ative John Sorley as a republican can
didate—a man who years ago betrayed
his party in lie election of a United
States senator, and who in the last
house was simply a tail to Casey's
democratic kite: who secures whatev
er of political promInonce he obtains
iir ugli a fact, as to ancestry which he
does not allow to be overlooked, and
who clutches the skirts of the repub
lican party only because it has a big
majority in the state.
