The father of W. H. Ross, resid ing ten miles northwest of IJnton. arrived in Linton to-day by Milwau kee train, and was met bore by his son. His home is in Kingsbury county is. D., and he is out on a visit to the family uf his son. Comrade Rnss has a good record as a I'nion civil war soldier. He was in his tirst en listment Orderly Sergeant now called hirst Sergeant I of Company "C" of the l.'I'Jd Pennsylvania, and afterward re-enlisted in the lltli Pennsylvania Cavalry and was made Quartermaster Sergeant of the regi ment. Elmer Hardy, a sailor boy on the United States man of war New Hampshire, and who formerly re sided in Emmons county, writes as follows to the Record: "I received a copy of the Record to-day in which was mentioned a pamphlet of your publication on Emmons county. Will you please send me a copy of it'.' The more 1 see of other countries and places, the more I think of Emmons county, and 1 in tend to go back to Linton again when my enlistment expires. A la boring man is up against a hard proposition in the east and south east. I think the navy is about as good an employment as can be found here. Since 1 last wrote you this ship has been to Europe twice and visited Denmark, Sweden, Rus sia and (iermany on one cruise. The other was to England and France. We start for South America and the West Indies in about ten days." The bootleggers provided in every community under our beautiful pro hibition law have robbed us of part of our help this week. As it is, we do not get out until Saturday. For this reason there can be no detailed write-up of the trip to Bismarck last Monday, Emmons County Day, except to say that there was a crowd of between six and seven hundred Emmons county people there that r»0 cents each was charged them for admission, including newspaper men who had given columns of free advertising to the show that the address of President Worst was. as usual, practical and to the point: that the Exposition is first-class in everyway: that the- Northern Pa cific—the same olil bunch of robbers that held up Emmons county in the early days for about eighteen thou sand dollars of taxes, and that re fused last winter to allow the con ductor of the Linton train to haul his passengers to Bismarck from Mc- Kenzie when the connecting train was seven hours late and the engine had to go to the Capital City for water- -this same old brigand cor poration had promised a reduced rate of one and a third fare, but played a confidence game on its pa trons and charged them the full rate, the agent iri Bismarck giving each of the passengers a piece of pa lter with hieroglyphics that made it look like a Chinese laundry-ticket. However, this last deal is so damn ably rank that it is predicted that the N. P. company will sooner or later return the money they have obtained nnder false pretenses. In the mean time, the people of Linton ind vicinity should not forget that there is a competing railroad at Lin ton. Barring this fly in the oint ment, the hold-up by the Northern Pacific, the day was thoroughly en joyed by all, although the ride go ing and coining was extremely tedi ous five mortal hours being taken each way to haul the train sixty-odd miles. Such dirty deals as the N. P. continuously gives the people aim its lines are responsible! for much of the ill-feeling that prevails in this state against railroads gene rally. CHANGED OWNERS.
