R. R. HOOUG, M. D. General Practice. IN PIONEER DATS This week the Record prints anoth er bunch of local items taken from its issue printed twenty-five years ago. when it was published at Will iamsport, then the county seat of Emmons county. These items are taken from the issue of February 4. 1*7. In addition, some mention is made of the news which appeared in the second issue of the Record, June 17. 1SS4. In Town and Out. Mr. John Goughnour, of Buchan an. visited the county seat one day last week. several houses near Hoskins, dur ing the absence of their owners, were recently robbed of provisions and other property. The jrruund-hog came out of his hole, according to program. The snow filled the hole before he could get back, and the g. h. died on the prairie. The Northern Pacific will furnish seed wheat to Dakota farmers living west of Jamestown in the country tributary to its line, to be repaid bushel for bushel this fall. Exchange: There was once upon a time a man who thought him won drous wise he swore by all the fa bled gods he'd never advertise. But the goods were advertised ere long and thereby hangs a tale: The "ad" was set in little type and headed "Sherilf's Sale." Born.- Saturday, Jan, 29, to Mr. and Mrs. VV. M. Derr, of Williams sport, a daughter. No democratic vote there,Will. But perhaps, by the time the young lady reaches 21, the women will be voting. (The young lady referred to was Miss Edith Derr, who^e parents at one time had charge of the Linton house. She is now married and living in the east.) In northern Dakota the snow-fall is usually light, and, being dry, much of it blows into the coulees (ravines!, leaving the uplands bare in most places. The first winter he was here, our coroner, Uncle Dan Long, "arne to town one day after the wind had been blowing and the snow of a few days before had al most disappeared. "Well, boys," said he, "this is a funny country— where the snow blows around until it wears out." It isn't wearing out to any great extent about this time, is it, Uncle Dan? Old-timers of many years' residence say they nev er saw so much snow here in any previous winter. A young friend of the Record writes: "Don't stop my paper. I can't pay for it ju9t now but I knmv the value of the paper to this eo'.inty, and I'll pay for it just as soon as I can." The copy sent to you will not be discontinued. No sub scriber who has come to Emmons county to stay need fear having his copy of this paper stopped during these dull times. Of course, if we can't get all, we would like to get a part from each one owing us. We know, if this country should prove a failure (which we see no likelihood of its doing), we'd all "go broke" together but, on the contrary, if it continues to come up to the expecta tions of its citizens, it won't be many years until we can all wear sto clothes" seven days a week. In other words, if success comes to our people, we'll get ninety per cent of what's owing to us, which allows for the few dead-beats found in ev ery countrv. If the future should be one of failure, why, then, we'll Authorities Care lor Family. B.d 'tS^,l "tanktnnaClhim «tr utoi-v ff ni'les lh rg River" all take passage up the same craft. Winchester Correspondence. Mr. A. H. Morrison, the Win chester mail-route contractor, passed over the line the other day to see that everything was in good con dition. Six teams from this neighborhood departed for Bismarck in one day last week. They were Messrs. Ma hane.v. Petrie, Parker, Wilson. Bum stead and Stouder. —Cherry Grove Correspondence. Messrs. W. S. Casselman and John C. ("Jack"! Dwyer are hauling hay from Goose Lake. (The former gentleman is now known as "Jedge," he being the police magistrate in Bismarck. Mr. Dwyer moved away years ago.) Mail-carriers, railroads and town sites are the principal topics at pres ent in this part of the county. (It was more thar. eleven years before the railroads or townsites were any thing else but "topics," the first rail road in Emmons being the Soo, which was bui!t to Braddock in 1898.) Lost! Between Steele and Will iamsport, Jack Lloyd, better known as the "blizzard-blown mail-car rier." As he ha$ not been seen or heard from in these parts for ten days, the people who get their mail at Armstrong postoffice will give a jack-pot to any one capturing and delivering him to them within the next fortnight. Armstrong Correspondence.— A. B. Peterson started for Bis marck day before yesterday with a load of wheat and some dressed hogs. Uncle Dudley thinks the mail facilities are a "thunderin* sight wusser" than when he carried it "for nothin'." He never likes to use the same cuss-word twice on the same subject, and when your correspond ent. saw him last the above was all he had in stock. —Editorial.— The saloon has been fired out of the capitol building at Bismarck. In other words, the tippling legislators have been de-horned. The second issue of the Record was printed June 17. 1884. Three columns of display advertising ap peared in it,practically all from Bis marck firms. At that time nearly all of Emmons county was directly tributary to Bismarck for even so much as a paper of needles. It was as common then to hitch up and drive from thirty to fifty miles to Bismarck as it is now to drive three or four miles to your nearest town. It was not uncommon then to walk the distance. In fact, when the ed itor of the Record made his initial trip into Emmons county half of it was accomplished on foot. A local announces that the Bold Bismarck Bonehunters are abroad in the land. Gathering buffalo-bones was a common buisness for Em mons county people then. In its second issue the Record of fers a three years' "paid-up" sub scription to the first Emmons county couple whose marriage announce ment appears in its columns. Note of the finding of coal—"Da kota Diamonds," as the Record dubs the product—is made. One vein was found by prospectors on the Edick place and the other on the S. E. Brindle farm (near Hazelton), while a well was being dug. .» Jnf™, AccMent Avefted tanley, Peli. 3.-Solomon Hog- Gackle, Feb. 3,-Christ Kroll hada narrow ^ape whlle at the co'nnm,ed h% "T ..tau .- Attorney Miller hands and ply them, but upon starting the ele ie mimediatelv made an investiga-, vator only a portion of the corn t,m ami found the Hogness family passed through chute, and Mr. riding in a small shack, consisting Kroll went to find the trouble He of hut two small rooms, wilh very jumped into the bin upon a pyramid few cooking utensils.
