One day not long ago Fred Cotton's wagon, heavily laden, stuck in a gumbo patch a few miles east of town, and the horses couldn't budge it. So Fred hied himself to a neigh boring farm-house to borrow a shovel with which to dig out the sunken wheels. The ladv of the house attempted to interest him in church matters in lieu of a shovel but he finally secured the implement after he had assured the lady that he was not likely to join any church until after he was through with the job of getting his wagon out of the gumbo.
