Delmarva Leader and the Seaford News

The Delmarva Leader and Seaford News was founded in Seaford, Delaware, in 1944, published and edited by W. Wright Robinson. Robinson had owned and published the Delmarva Leader since 1934; he bought the Seaford News in September 1943 and combined the two titles. The new weekly publication noted that it had been "serving Seaford since 1891," dating the paper to the origin of the Seaford News.

The newspaper's masthead included illustrations of Seaford's two most prominent industries, farming and manufacturing. In fact, the arrival in 1939 of the world's first nylon plant, operated by the DuPont Company, led to the expansion of Seaford, which helped increase the need for local newspapers. The paper reported news local to Seaford and other Sussex County communities and included personal news such as engagements and funerals. Also included were advertisements for many of Seaford's businesses, as well as notices about movie times and church services.

By 1947, the newspaper had expanded from eight to ten pages and supported a plant supervisor, office staff, and three pressmen. The Delmarva Leader and Seaford News continued publishing weekly under that title until the February 19, 1975 issue, when the name was shortened to the Leader. In 1982, the Leader merged with the State Register to become the Leader and State Register. It continued to be published through 2003.
