SCALPERS
SWINDLED.
Three strangers have successfully
fleeced a number of second band deal
ers on the coast by a ticket scalping
scheme A few days ago they were
visited by a man who su'd them 1,000
mile books of tlekets for half the reg
ular price*10. Prospects of big profits
at once loomed up and tbe books
were purchased freely.
Ky explaining that tbe books could
be rented for 00 cent, a round trip,
between Wilmington and Philadel
phia and a good profit made, the
stranger sold many of the mileage
books.
Oil Friday two more strangers pur
porting to be contractors, called on
the merchants and of them rented
books to take several laborers to Phil
adelphia.
These two men really were the con
federates of the men who originally
sold the books, and when tbey rent
ed tbe mileage, for the round trip,
they kept, tbe books.
The merchants who bought tbe
transportation now lose the books aud
tile price tbey paid for llicm, and
fear to complain lest tbe railroad de
Icctives will take some action against
them for ticket scalping.
Tbe man who sold the books said
be was enabled to dispose of them at
such a low price becauso be obtained
them at a cut rate.
lie said lie was boarding at tbe
Pennsylvania Hotel, aud would re
main there awhile to redeem the
bunks if the merchants could not rent
them for the round trip between Wil
mington and Philadelphia.
The purchasers evidently remem
bered tins, for John M. Mulrouncy,
proprietor of the hotel, was surprised
when about a dozen Hebrews trooped
into Ills placo and inquired for the
man who bad sold tbo mileage trans
portation to them.
Mr. Mulroouoy said ail lie knew
about the men described was that
they stopped lit bis barroom to buy
drinks a lew times.
Now there Is muoli walling and la
menting along the "coast, " because
of the clever swindle.
Not cue of the men who bought
the books can be induced to open bis
mouth about the occurrence,

BOOKS FOR
CHILDREN.
Chrlatmns 1« essentially a children's
festival. The spool'll preparations that
are belnf made for tbe holiday seaaon at
the Wlliniugton Institute Free Library
are therefore particularly appropriate.
Within the last week additional electrlo
llghta have been Installed in tbe children'*
room ao that It la now much more cheer
ful and pleasant than ever before. A lib
eral supply of green Including pine
branohea, holly and mistletoe bung
about the room, every electrlo light be.
Ing encircled by holly. The ohlldren are
very much Interested In thie proco s of
beautiful
making their corner
contributions of tha littla ones have been
nnmsroua. Two or three little boys, who
were not very well clothed, Insisted on
being allowed to buy wreaths of holly aud
sprigs of evergreen that they might con
tribute to the decoration.
The bulletin boards too are well cover
ed with pictures in blaok and white and
colors illustrative of
Jesus or of modern Christmas celebration.
Tbeso pictures have for tbe most part
been out from tbe illustrated papers,
though this oolleotioD has been augment
ed by kind friends of the library who de
light In pleasing tbe children.
Most of tbe time during the ln6t few
weeks that tbe ohildreu could spare fr
their studies and from ohrlstmas pin us
hai been devoted to reading along the
line of Christmas customs. For two or
three weoks ohlldren have been clamor
ing for Christmas poems aud books and
artiolos on Christmas customs. In re
spouse these wide spread requests, the
children's libmriup has
tensive list. This list
tire book* but mostly Is made up of refer
ence to ariiolee in collections of tnsga
zluoi. The list has been typewritten and
Is available to young and old alike who
may wish to consult lu Obviously the
list Is too long to give entire lu these ool
uinns. A selection however may be of
servloe to toachers aud parente who may
be besieged by walking Interrogation
points.
It should besaid that most of tbe books
referred to buve been reserved for refer
enoo in the library. All of them being
brought together lu two or three sbelvej.
Since Christmas had Its origin in tbe
birth of Christ, reference is made to Lew
Wallace's "Boyhood of Christ" and Quer
bar's "Legends of the Virgin and Christ."
From the voluminous literature on tbe
history, customs and observances of
Christmas one may seleat Brand's "Pop
ular Antiquities of Great Britain" (con
suit tbe index), Chambers' "Book of
Days" vol. 2 Washington Irving's "Christ
mas eve' and "Chalations day" (in 'sketch
book"). Wagnee's "Manners. Customs
and Observance" pp. 277 86 and Welsh's
"Curiosities of Ponular customs."
Among Christmas stories again it is
bard to ahooee there are so many good
ones. Diokens' "Christmas Carol" though
old Is always new. Eugene Field's "The
first Christinas tree" (iu bis "Little Book
of Profitable Tales)" has already beoorae
a classic. Dodge's "Hans Biinker" de
scribes Christinas iu Holland* Miss
Alctts books contain
stories aud tbe typewritten
brary point* (hem all out.
It Is thought that Bellamy Goodwin's
"Open Sesame" (8 rols.) and lloCaeky's
"Chrlstuiue in Bong Sketch and Story"
contains the best collodions of Christmas
lore. Attention Is also callsd to Eugene
Hield's "Jest fore Christmas" lb his
"Love Songs of Childhood" and most
famous of all Moore's "Night before
Christmas" which will be found in many
collections of poems.
