The great danger appre hended is from the immense gorges ot lee in the Allegheny and Monougnhelu rivers. The obstructions are of the most serious charaeter and liable to do almost incalculable damage to river era ft moored between this point and Wheeling, mul should the moderate weather and rains bringdown with the lee the heavy snows from up river points the flood which will result is likely to bo a record breaker. The gorge in the Allegheny extends almost without a break from Pittsburg fully seventy miles up the river and varies in thickness from live feet to sixteen feet. The Ice is frozen to the bottom of the river in many places and is damming the water, with the result that the river Is rising above the gorge, ami this fact points out that when the first waters of the rise come the water will be dammed back until the valley along the river will be flooded, which will do damage not to be computed in money. The river from Wheeling to Parkers burg is gorged almost solid, and the river men fear this almost as much as they do the gorge in the Allegheny, for that many boats are frozen to the bank at various places, and way to protect them selves or their tows from the ice when it breaks. It is feared that in addition to losing their tows many of the boats themselves will be lost the heavy h e. the reus these hav account of SUMMING UP.
