the immortal Lincoln, and
I/f
the most interesting is that which
the late Anthony Revbold, often
narrated to hin friends, says tho
Philadelphia Telegraph. Mr. Key- j
bold, who died lost June, was a ;
very prominent Delawarean. He ,
j was n personal friend of President ,
Lincoln, and. during the Civil War, j
had the confidence of the Admiuis
'ration. His ad vicejnnd his services |
were particularly valuable to the ;
cause, and no one appreciate i
ed this more than did Lincoln him- j
self. It was Mr. Roy bold who dur
ing the riots in Baltimore at the I
outbreak of the rebellion, traus- j
ported Union troops from Philadel- !
phiu to Washington without going I
through the Monumental City by
leaving the Philadelphia, \\liming
ton & Baltimore Railroad at Perry
ville, Aid., and hoarding a steam
boat, for the national capital. It
was this plan that undoubtedly
saved Washington.
One day white Mr. Rey nold and a
friend were walking on Pennsyl
vania avenue and dlcussing the
•'troublous war times,''the former
staled what he would do if he ware !
President. They did not notice that, i
a lull man wus but a short distance
behind them, and that he overheard j
partly at least, their conversation. |
Suddenly a large band was placed >
Mr. Keybold's shoulder, with the
inquiry: "Well, Mr Revbold, what
would you do If you werePresideut?"
The interrogator was Liocolu, and It
was the President who had been
their wake. The trio then waiked
to the White House, aud as they
proceeded the Chief Executive listen
ed intently to bis frieud's views, and
also freely expressed his own opin
ions. This was but one of the many
experiences that Mr. Revbold had
with Lincoln, and it was always a
pleasure for him to tell of then: at
length. His name is allied with the
history of Delaware.
