The Odessa Herald and The Odessa Leader

The Odessa Herald was first published in Odessa, Delaware, on November 3, 1888 by C. H. Sentman. This issue included a statement from the editor that the Herald, though a Republican newspaper, would remain unbiased and unprejudiced, and fair and courteous to opposing beliefs. In fact, Sentman wrote, "Our Democratic friends are invited to a free use of our columns. Their side shall have a fair and impartial hearing."

The Herald supported protective tariffs and election reform.It was also devoted to the interests of Odessa and the surrounding town and county. The newspaper included a section called "News Epitomized" that covered national news divided by region as well as providing concise news updates from each major town in the surrounding area. A section entitled "Sabbath School" was also included to comment and analyze specific Bible passages.

In September of 1892, the Odessa Herald underwent a change in management that resulted in a new title: Odessa Leader. The new editor, W. A. Bobb, addressed the change in a column but indicated that the mission of the Odessa Leader would remain the same as that of its predecessor, including its Republican partisanship. In fact, Bobb noted that the Odessa Leader was the only Republican paper published in New Castle County. He wrote that the newspaper intended to "advance the interests of Odessa and her citizens by every honorable means, and to promulgate the principals of the Republican Party."

It is unknown when the Odessa Leader ceased publication.
