Lives of !e»«n Fishermen.
A good dog atory cornea from Maint
to a Wnah ngtou letter-writer,
lluell, a former well-known journalist !
of that oily, usually goes hunting dur- j
in g the sporting season on the PunoM
scot Bay. When not hunting lie leaves j
his dog ' Pat," a very fine-bred Irian I
retriever, in care of a fisherman on '
the shores of the bay. ▲ fuw days :>gc
Mr. Buell received a letter from the
fisherman, telling of a remarkable
performance oi Pat in rescuing no less
thuu seven persons from a fishing
smack that hail boon thrown on a reef
a. c. ;
in a heavy gale. The smack was
lodged on one oi the reefs of Ureal
Spoon Island, about two hundred feel
from the shore. The men hoisted Big- 1
mils of distress, aud were in momenta- 1
ry danger of being swept away. Tre
mendous waves were running, and the 1
crowd of excited fishermen on the :
shore knew that it wouid he fatal foi j
them to attempt a rescue, as no boat !
in their possession could live in that |
sen. Suddeuly the one who had in his j
care the dog Pat bethought him that ,
the ilog had been taught to not only !
retrievo, but to tow boats by a rope I
from one point to another, and often:
when a boat would get adrift he would j
be sent for it, and would run his nose ;
under the painter till he would come :
to the end of it. when he would take j
it in his teeth and fetch tbe boat to
shore.
"Pat«' was at once called. A long j
cod-lino was attached to a piece oi
lath and flung as far as possible intc |
the water. "Pal" promptly spraog in. j
swam to it, and brought it to the
shore; Several times lie repeated this '
performance. The fisherman were in :
despair. The waves were splashing so '
high they could not direct the dog's •
attention to the men on the rent Fin- j
ally ••Pat" seemed to comprehend that j
there was something more serious <
on hand than fie had at first thought, j
He raised hts head and looked intently
over tiie water. His eye caught sight j
of the boat with its signals of distress, j
and the waves dashing over it. When !
the latii with tbe cod-line attached was j
again thrown into the water "Pat" at j
otieo sprang after it, took the lath in j
his teeth, and instead of turning to tbe ;
shore, struck out through the roaring !
surf lo the reef. Mnnv limes he was (
buried under the waves, but after a j
few minutes of intense suspense he '
was seen from the shore clam bering I
up the side of the reef, and a great j
shout went up as the imperiled sailors j
took hohl of him and lifted him into 1
tbo boat in nn almost exhausted condi
t on. In brief time a strong rope was !
attached to the cod-line. The men on

For those whose relations with him
were intimate—his fam ly, his social
