OHIO STATt TOW ANOTHER YEAR Buckeye Team Wins the Western Conference Championship by Defeat ing the Illinois Eleven. CARRY BANNER" Chicago No Match for Min of nesota and Northwestern » __. T •fcT-Vi-.oo'b-a Defeats lowa — neorasKa i Captures Missouri Valley Championship. Chicago, Nov. IT—Ohio State has Chick Harleyed Itself Into another western conference championship. While the Buckeyes were tagging their brunette halfback to 13 to 0 win over Illinois this afternoon. Chi cago allowed Itself to be trampled on by Minnesota, 33 to 0. That left Ohio State with the only clean record In the big ten, Minnesota previously having been eliminated by Wisconsin which In turn had lost to Illinois. MICHIGAN'S RECORD. Bv defeating Northwestern at Evanston next Saturday, Michigan s conference record will be one won and none loat. But it is doubtful if the Wolverines will regard that as a claim on the conference title—or any other. Ohio State's victory today was Just a case of 11 men being nable to stop one man. When Harley couldn't guln through the line or around the end, he tossed forward passes to some assist ant. When that didn't work he would boot a field goal. MAROONS SWAMPED. Minnesota licked the Maroons In a manner suggestive of murder and sud den death. Nebraska did the expected and cop ped the Missouri valley championship by beating Kansas, 13 to 3. Iowa gave Northwestern a hard bat tle, forcing the purple to extend Itself to grab a 25 to 14 victory. OREGON WINS GAME FROM CALIFORNIA BY SHUTOUT SCORE Eugene, Ore., Nov. 17.—The surprise #f the coast football season was sprung | here this afternoon. Facing a team far more experienced ] and weighing 13 pounds more to the man, the University of Oregon foot ball team defeated California 21 to 0. Oregon played through the game without running In a substitute. Andy Smith, California coach, made five changes in his team during Ehe game in an effort to stop Oregon scoring. The victory is attributed largely to the work of Hugo Bezdek, Oregon coach, and Dot Medley, Fred Haison and Bill Steers, Oregon players. California was unable to understand the team work of the Oregon team. Steers threw forward passes almost at will and 20 and 30-yard runs down the i field before the heavy Californians were common. Oregon was unable to score In the first quarter, but early In the second Steers caught the ball and raced 60 yards the California team for a touchdown. Steers or Medley were responsible for all the Oregon touchdowns. The game completely upset all dope. Football students along the coast cheerfully predicted that the Bears would win. and the Californians came here certain of success. CAMP LEWIS TEAM DEFEATS MULTNOMAH Camp Lewis, Tacoma, Nov. 17.—A game featured by exciting plays from ■tart to finish, the 91st division foot ball team defeated the-Multnomah Ath letic club of Portland on the parade grounds today by a score of 10 to 3. The game was the first big one that j has been staged at the post and ! brought out a cro^d of about 5000, j mostly soldiers. The score doesn't do Justice to the i playing of the soldiers, as they were ! on the offensive most of the time and 1 gained a great deal more ground than 1 their opponents. The work of the 1 backs and the Interference was won- . derful. The army line also held In j fine style, and with the exception of I a few minutes In the third quartar, | kept the Portland men off- until the , backs had had time to get a good start. | The army players were penalized several times for being off side, and ! lost more than twice os much ground In this way than the visitors. In fact, a 16-yard penalty practically robbed] the soldiers of a touchdown in the first quarter, when they rushed the ball down the field to Multnomah's 10-yard line, only to lose a fine chance by being penalized. WASHINGTON PLAYS OREGON AGGIES TIE Seattle, Wash., Nov. 17.—University of Washington emerged from the quagmire of football oblivion this af ternoon at Denny Field by fighting Oregon Agricultural college to a scoreless tie and onee more assumed the respect of northwest football fans. Washington was a rank outsider when the season opened. Her oppon ents laughed and made merry after 10 yqprs of constant defeat at her hands. Her own adherents went about shroud ed In gloom. And the rank outsiders fought man to man against the strongly favored Oregon Aggies, and outplayed them to a final score of: Washington, 0; Oregon Aggies, 0.
