CARAGE SERVICE OVER THE COUNTRY GREATLY IMPROVED Fields Secretary of the Lin coin Highway Association Tells of Better Conditions Found on Trip. Automobile traffic has become so much a feature all over the land that the little garage in the blacksmith shop or the garuge In a store and the many temporary structures erected along the roadside are now giving way to modern brick and concrete fire proof structures all over the land. H. S. Ostermann, field secretary of the Lincoln Highway association, and Roy S. Marsh, the "scout masteY," both brought back word from trips of thou sands of miles of the improvement in garaging conditions in every section of the country. The garage men who started in a small way, substituting work on mo tor cars and the supplying of motor cars with gasoline, oil and other ne cessities, have prospered, and are to day proprietors of large, roomy, light buildings constructed along the latest and most modern lines to care for a business which, light at the start, has grown to remarkable proportions. This condition not only exists in the more settled eastern country, but is found in the far west in small towns and in places where tourists would expect to discover only the most meager accom modation for the car, and where they will really find the very best for the car, and oftentimes the poorest for the tourist. TELL8 OF DIFFICULTIES. Mr. Marsh, after his sealed hood, clutch and transmission run of 6202 miles over the Lincoln highway to the Pacifio coast, and back over the Na tional Old Trails roads in the Elgin Six National All Trails scout car, told of some of the difficulties he met with, and of the splendid care he received on the trip. The Elgin scout car, which was surveying and reporting the roads for the United States war department, and foi* the many associations of na tional character Interested in road de velopment, and the establishment of transcontinental and other touring, sprung a leak in the radiator on Its trip of over 825 miles in 24 hours across the Mojave desert. The leak was on the inner side and seals could not be broken without yielding one of the ob Jects of the trip.. Frequent stops at garages in an effort to stay off certain failure of this feature were necessary. •And 1 was never more surprised," said Mr. Marsh, "than to find in every little town and hamlet through which we passed, and at which we stopped to work upon our radiator, splendid gar ages. modern tn every way, and with ISIS TODAY ONLY SHIRLEY IN THE LADY OF THE PHOTOGRAPH A COMEDY DRAMA OF AN UNUSUAL KIND. The garage men were all of a pros perous lot, not given to overcharging, glad to see tourists anil ready to sell them almost anything wanted for their ear. They were each and every one most interested in the Elgin and its ob jects as they felt that our work would serve to increase still more their work with tourists by increasing the tour ing traffic through knowledge of the roads."
