desk, and before him was ranged a line
of women and children, some gesticu
lating excitedly and interrupting him
constantly, others quietly awaiting their
turn in the important business of as
signing pupils new to the school to the

Two teachers, evidently re*-**««* at
the school, were seated at another desk
doing the preliminary work of taking
the names and nddresjcs of the persons
waiting to fee tin* principal, and two
more were standing uneasily "near the
llirone," I said t<> myself a bit cynically,
evidently waiting fm* orders.
That Mr. Stockbridge saw mo almost
ns soon as 1 reached the doorway I was
certain. But he ga\e no sign that ho
hnd done so, and with a feeling of re
sentment at the bizarre conditions sur
rounding my new position 1 walked
toward the desk where the two teachers
were taking the names of tho new
