THREE MONTH8 I .-4' 75< No. 26 Telephone Published every Friday by ML N. Fegtlv Entered as second-class matter January 4,1906, at the post office at Silver City, Idaho, under the Act of Congress of March 3, 1879. FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 1908. This week we publish a communi cation on Socialism which voices the views of that pariy. While we may not hold the same view as some of our con tributors, we believe in all sides being heard, as all have a perfect right to their own ideas on all subjects. The candidates put forward by the various political parties are undoubtedly all men of high standing and merit, and would make creditable officials. The voter must chose between them, not only by their personal qualifications, but also by the principles and platform upon which they go before the people. of The unreasonable commeuts by some of tbe radical supporters of the differ ent factious of the democratic party, upon the candidates and supporters of the other side, show a spirit of intol erance and attempted "bossism" that should be severely censured, and which will help to widen the breach already in their rauks. It is utterly uucalled for and should be stopped, as no good can come of such rot, aud, if the demo cratic party is going to "cut any ice in the coming election, it behooves all the different factions to quit their foolishness aud repair their brokeu rauks and pull together. of as ' ' WHAT BKYAN STANDS FOIL (From «an Francisco Star ) Bryan ia the ouly man in history who, having beeu twice defeated for the highest office in his country, has re ceived a third nomination. There is no doubt that lie was defeated in 1896 by fraud and the corrupt use of money con tributed by special privilege corpora tions, nor is there much less doubt that he was defeated in the same way iu 1900. That is tbe view that is becoming as well fixed in the American mind as that Tildeu was robbed of the presidency in 1876. Bryau's political faith may be summed up in tbe seutence: He be iieves iu public ownership of govern ment, and hae devoted his life to that end. He sees that the people do not coutrol their own government. He sees that it is controlled by the owners of special priveleges, and that they con trol it bv the corrupt use of money un justly taken from the people by the power of taxation, without representa tion, possessed by the owueis of private monopoly. It is said, and will be said during this campaign, that Bryan is op posed in his own party. He is, thank God, opposed by such men as Ryan and Belmont of New York, GufTey of Penn sylvania, Jim Hill of tbe Great North ern and Northern Pacific and Burling ton railroads, aud by every other who, calling himself a Democrat, stands for aud with special privilege. The ele ment in the Democratic party that op poses Bryan is tbe same element that in the Republican party controls tte United States Senate and the House of Representatives, and that90 completely controlled the convention that nomin ated Mr. Taft. The element in the Democratic party that tried to defeat Bryan and tried to frame a Republican platform at Denver is the same element that now straddles and guides the Re publican elephant with its two disting uished passengers—Taft and Sherman. The men iu the Democratsc party that oppose Bryan are of the same kind as the men who nominated Shermau be cause of his willing obedience to the orders of Speaker Cannon.
