Fegtly Entered «8 second-clasp matter January 4, 1905, at the post office at Silver City, Idaho, under the Act of Congress of March 3,1879. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1908. AFTER ELECTION. The results of the election seem to have been very satisfactory to the business men of the country. Im mediately after election large orders were placed for copper, zinc and lead. This made a sharp advance in the prices of those metals and stimulated the buying of mining stocks. The Butte stocks in partic ular experienced something of a boom. Gratifying as it is to have the metals advance it must not be forgotten that an advance in price which is fostered bv anything hut a steadv demand for the metals is apt to be followed by a reaction. The manufael urers of the country are notoriously Republican in their tendencies and may possibly have held hack their orders prior to elec tion on account of political feeling. On the other hand it must be ad mitted that the American people have contracted a ' habit" of drop ping business affairs during the months immediately preceeding a national election, very much in the manner of many business houses which refrain from placing orders during the last few days of the month. Again, a prospective chance in the management or policy of any business or organization is apt to disorganize normal conditions and cause a falling off in activity. In any one of these instances à return to regular conditions will cause a temporary increase beyond the normal with the possibly falsi indication of better times, conditions, however, are apt to be followed by more or less of a action. We do not wish to infer that we have the slightest fear for the fu ture, for, to the contrary, we can not hut feel that the reports which conie from all sides, from Demo cratic and Republican sources alike, of hundreds of thousands of men being put to work, and of hundreds ot thousands of dollars being added to the payroll of the nation, can hardly he entirely the products of political feeling or party prejudices. Not only do the Republicans feel buoyant over the election, hut the Democrats appear only a little less satisfied. President Roosevelt tahlished the political precedent of paying attention to the demands of the minority. Some went so far as to say that he took all the wind out of Democracy's sails, but a better way to put it is to say that he rec ognized the strong points in the arguments of the minority and was influenced thereby. Now that his precedent has been established and proven 'good politics" there is little doubt but lhat tile principle will be con tinued, and the Democrats feel that they have put up such a good fight that their main contentions are Such re es sure to be recognized in shaping the ; future policy of the nation.—Min ing Science.
