LINING UP.
The people used powder and
ball in their fight for constitu
tional liberty. They have only
the ballot in the contest inaug
urated for industrial freedom.
The lines are already drawn,
and we find they are not political.
On each side are Republicans,
on each side Democrats—men
of influence in the councils of
the nation. On the one hand
are those, and so far the most
powerful, who are attempting to
prostitute a great principle of
government for the benefit of
the few; on the other are those
who would apply it as its framers
—the founders of the Republican
party—intended, for the benefit
of all.
When partisanship vanishes
in the presence of such an issue,
when Republicans and Democrats
stand shoulder to shoulder
against oppressive
backed up by other Republicans
and Democrats presenting
equally solid front and strength
ened by the knowledge of the
power placed in their hands—the
power of Cannonism and of Al
d rich ocra ey—when such condi
tions are presented, then the in
tensity, the bitterness of the con
test may be appreciated.
The preliminares are to be
fought out at the session of con
gress convening last week. The
real battle may be far off,—how
remote none can tell. Prophecy
is purposeless in the light of such
a contest; but the duty of the
people is unmistakable—to lend
their support at the polls to
those who are making the fight
for them; to break the power of
such men as Cannon by tearing
down their supports, not in the
next campain only, but in every
ca in pain until the victory shall
be won.
The time has passed when
honeyed words and platform
platiudes will suffice. The citizen
of today wants to know where
every aspirant for office stands
on the vital issues. He'don't
care anything" about the froth
anymore. The contest just be
gun, and which will project it
self monentously across the
pages of this country's history,
should develop a cleavage in the
ranks as between the worthy and
the unworthy, as between the :
men and the mice.,—Statesman.

The value of a growing livestock

receipts at the local yards du ring
the past month. In November
6518 cattle, 583 calves, 7549
sheep, 12744 hogs and 274
horses were brought to the Port
land market. The approximate
value of the 457 cars that made
up the receipts was $567,500,
a tidy sum that went into the
pockets of the famers and stock
men of the Northwest.
