It is a real play, for a real, red blooded people and, while in no sense of the word a preachment, neverthe less it contains one of the most hu manly interested stories ever screened. For the presentation of Lockwood and Miss Allison, Thomas Rick etts, who directed the screening of "The House of a Thousand Scandals," surrounded them with an exceptional ly clever company of screen players, including Josephine Ditt, as Gretta Carr; William Ehfe, as Ralph, Mar tha's country suitor; Hal Clements, as Farmers Hobbs; Bessie Banks, as Mrs. Hobbs; Perry Banks, as the trouble maker of the village; and Robert Klein, as the lawyer. , The scenes, particularly those in which the Greek dances, produced un der the direction of Miss Margaret Hawkesworth, take place, are the most pretentions of their kind ever filmed. "The House of a Thousand Scan dals," concerns John Wright, who, up on inheriting the vast estates and mil lions of his father and having to some extent become a student of sociology, starts out to investigate the various sources from which his income is de rived. Riding through a wooded sec tion, he meets Martha Hobbs, the rag ged, yet beautiful daughter of Farmer Hobbs, a close-fisted, hard hearted taskmaster, who, although possessing considerable means compels his wife and daugter to lead a life of contin ued drudgery. The wife, collapsing under the strain, finally dies, and Martha, after blaming her father for her death, leaves to seek a home with relatives in the city. Unable to find her relatives, she ac cepts a temporary home with an aged woman in her shabby, foul-smelling iairly alive \lth rooms. There Wright, still investigat ing his properties, comes upon her. Wright, sick at heart, establishes an industrial home and places Martha and her benefactress in charge. He becomes interested in Martha and she, likewise, becomes interested in him. One day, Wright hears a lecture on the life of the ancient Greeks and becomes interested, so much so, in fact, that he induces Gretta Carr, the lecturer, to join him in the formation o f a Grecian colony. The colony is established in the village where Mar tha had lived. All members of the cult wear the flowing garb of the an cient Greeks and dance and sing on the spacious lawns in front of the house, where the headquarters of the colony arc located. The opening of the colony is the for a wave of scandal that occasion gradually sweeps throughout the country. The gossipy town-folks are horror-stricken at the sight of scores of young, men and women, dancing and walking about in the scanty Grec ian garb. The indignation of the vil lagers rises to fever heat, when they learn that Martha is aprominent mem ber of the cult, Ralph, a rejected suitor of Martha's, and her father, see a chance to even themselves with the girl and their false stories soon re sult in the organization of a mob, which storms the home of the cult. The mob is led by Ralph, who, un der his arm, carries a box of dyna mite. Entering the house, he goes to a deserted room, places the explosive and'lights the fuse. Wright catches him in the act, chokes and leaves him unconscious. Then he flees after warning the others to follow. As the last of the occupants reaches the lawn, 8 a explosion and a moment before was a magnificent home, is now a tangled mass of smok Ralph, later, is found dead ing ruins, in the ruins. From the ruins, rises an even more beautiful structure and the happy life of the cult is resumed, amid the deaf ening approval of the villagers. Then follows the marriage of the million aire and the young waif of the wild wood. "The House of a Thousand Scan dals," will be shown at the Majestic Theatre on Friday and Saturday of this week.
