RURAL CREDITS As this edition of The Gem Worker is to be circulated among the farmers of Ada county we present on our first page an interview given to the press by David Lubin, of Sacramento, one of the most active advocates of a per fected rural credits system in the In this interview Mr. United States. Lubin shows that by proper organi sation and a rural credit system that marketing of farm products would be carried on in a scientific manner and that the farmer would find a market for produce that now goes to waste and the cost of living would be mater ially reduced to the city resident. The Gem Worker believes that the most vital subject for the consideration of Idaho law-makers as far as the wel fare of the agricultural community is concerned is this very proposition of a workable rural credit law. The state of Oklahoma appears to have solved the problem and will have done so if a newly enacted statute of that state is found to be workable. The Oklahoma plan furnishes money on farm loans at a rate of four per cent, and the entire debt, both principal and interest, is extinguished in 23 'A years in regular payments every six months of a stated , which is at the rate a total o*f eight dollars per annum on each $100 borrowed. The money first loaned 5s the irreducible school and other similar funds of the state, and then additional money is obtained by the is^uince of bonds secured by the mortgages obtained upon these loans. This would make an endless chain of money obtained on bonds and loaned to the farmers. The plan is worthy of consideration by the farmers' socie ties of Tdaho. and if found feasible should be urged upon the next leg jslature. The prosperity of all classes rests ■primarily upon the prosperity of the farmers, who are the creators of the annual agricultural output of the country. If the farmers are prospér ait other classes will be corre ous, spondingly benefitted, and the one essential to the prosperity of great the farmers is money at a low rate of Interest rates are notorious interest. ly high in Idaho in comparison with .other states, and under present day .conditions this is not only unjust but 5s unjustifiable upon any good busi ness grounds. Agents of mortgage reported scouring the companies are of Kansas to make loans at 6 state cent and it should be as easy per for these concerns to operate in Tdaho as in Kansas. These matters should be taken up by the Grange and kin dred organizations and the aid of bankers and business men generally lecured to the end that cheap money may be made the basis of the pros perity of the farmers of the state. STREET CAR EMPLOYES There should be active propoganda work among the street car workers of Boise to have them all join the lo cal union of their trade. The union movement has been the great factor in the increase of wages and the reduc tion of the hours of work in all lijes of industry. It has won its fight for recognition of the right of laborers to combine for mutual protection and advantage and organized labor is now strongly entrenched in popular favor. Boise has always been a good union town and it is up to those who labor in any branch of service to unite and back one another as well as co-oper ating with other workers of the com munity. There is a loyal union of street car employees in this city, but some of the employees of the railway companies have never joined. We be lieve thesë are making a serious mis take, and one that should be reme died at once. When one considers the long battle for better conditions that has been waged by organized labor it is almost incomprehensible how any body of workers can remain out of their local union. They reap the benefits otherk have sown and make no effort to carry • their share of the expense. Surely if the tqatter is presented in the right light and backed up by the incontrovertible arguments of ex perience the workers will come in and do their share in the work which is essential to the welfare of the laboring class. Every union man' should assist in the upbuilding of the local union ti street car workers. The constant slogan of every good union member is to patronize home in dustries. The building up of home in dustries gives employment to our own people and is the very best essence of local patriotism. As we have stated before in these columns some big cigar factories could be built up in Boise if YOU and I and ALL OF US would insist on having a Boise made cigar every time we smoke. Let us all try it. Local factories can bring their prod ucts before people who believe in pat ronizing home industries by using the advertising columns of The Gem Worker. Are you keeping tab on the taber nacle controversy? The great Eorupean war has taken on new activities especially in the western theater where it would appear the French and English are endeav oring to break down the German en trenchments before winter sets in. Every citizen of Boise should at tend the Gem State fair and should go as often as possible. Nothing is more stimulating than to mix in a hap uy crowd. - Don't overlook the excursions to Arrow Rock dam every day next week, loin in with the happy bunch that will go. The apple market is opening with fair prices despite gloomy predictions.
