The Coeur d'Alene Press remarks blandly that its comments on the su preme court decision recently render ed allowing sheriffs double mileage in serving warrants and bringing prison ers from place of arrest before a court or committing magistrrte was not in tended as a "slap" at the sheriff of this county, and that the latter mis understood its motive. The effect this decision will have upon the earn ings of a sheriff's office amounts to very little, and if the Press really felt so badly over what it is pleased to call "legalized robbery" of the tax payers, as it would have the latter be lieve, it certainly would not have to go far from its own office for excellent grounds to work on. If a reduction is to be made in the fees or mileage of any county official let it be general among all of them. It is most ridic ulous for the Press to say that its comments on this decision were un biased. It might as well tell its read ers that a man afflicted with the jaun dice can tell one color from another, or that its attacks on Governor Mc Connell are prompted by any other motive than personal hatred of that official on the part of the Press editor. The national democratic committee in session at Washington, D. C., on the 16th instant, named Chicago as the place for holding the next demo cratic national convention, and the date July 7. The contest between rival cities was extremely hot and it required twenty-nine ballots to name the place where the nominations are to be made. New York was Chicago's most formidable competitor for the honors and was in the fleld"for blood. 'There was also a lively contest over thè date of holding the convention, some of the committee being desirous of holding it on June 2, two weeks before the republicans hold their con vention. 5) The Utah legislature has selected two men to represent that common wealth in the United States senate, Frank Cannon and Arthur Brown, both republicans and the former, at least, a strong bimetallist. Cannon's election to the United States senate seems ro give general satisfaction, be ing an able man well qualified to fill with credit to the state the honorable position to which he has been elevated. Browne is notso well liked and accord ing to press comments was not the choice of the people of Utah. But Browne is also an able man and may yet surprise them all. 4 i The board of county commissioners met?on Monday in regular session for the transaction of general business, of which there is quite a large amount on hands. Under a recent decision of the supreme court the board are not allowed to employ legal counsel, and are required to call upon the district attorney whenever such advice is de sired on any matter. Acting under this decision among one of their first acts at this meeting the board dis pensed with the services of Judge Keat. The fellow ove r in Roisewho chew ed a twenty-dollar bill to a pulp the other day, probably settled the cur rency question to his own satisfac tion, but the chances are he himself will die in a poor house or an insane asylum. It exemplifies the old say ing, "Whiskey in, wit out."—Ex.
